As Global Publications Director in Gaithersburg, MD, you'll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients' lives. GPPS (Global Product and Portfolio Strategy) bridges science and commercial, integrating corporate, portfolio, therapy areas and product strategies, providing strategic direction from early-stage research through to commercialization.  

   Main Duties and Responsibilities  

   Leadership and Coaching  

 
       
  •      Lead a team of Global Publication Leaders (GPL) responsible for development and execution of integrated strategic publication plans for global clinical trials from Phase I-IV (in humans studies) and non-clinical trial sources including HEOR, Epidemiology, RWE, Payer, and Non Interventional Studies (NIS). Ensures integrated publication strategy is consistently applied across all study designs, is clear & supportable scientific data are communicated to internal partners (product teams, governance bodies) and external customers (regulatory authorities, payers, physicians & patients)

  •      Lead global performance management, recruitment, training, and coaching of GPL team    
  •    
  •      Lead skills development for the GPLs and work closely and collaboratively with other Global Publications Directors and the Head of Global Publications to ensure delivery of training programs that are up to date with AZ publication policy and compliance requirements in order to deliver innovative scientific publications in ethical manner    
  •    
  •      Drive the development, maintenance and sharing of GPL best practice and expertise, so that AstraZeneca maintains a leading edge in ethical publication standards and in the use of publications as a competitive advantage in drug development under the direction of the Head of Global Publications    
  •    
  •      Coach GPL and other internal stakeholders on principles of integrated strategic publication planning, e.g. determining strategic approaches, alignment to the integrated medical affairs plan, building publication plans from first principles, managing a plan in theory and in practice, understanding the external and internal publications environment, compliance and integrating plans to meet Global, US and Regional market needs

  •      Review & provide guidance to GPLs on development & execution of integrated strategic publication plans

  •      Operate in a Player-Coach environment with both project and coaching responsibilities    
  •    
  •      Fosters and role model strong collaborative effort within the Global Publication Leadership Team and other functions to deliver on shared goals

   Publications Expertise  

 
       
  •      Drive the AZ strategy for compliance with internal and external publications policy & standards    
  •    
  •      Contribute to the publications policy and drive understanding of the policy to ensure compliance with internal and external publication standards    
  •    
  •      Drive training and development of educational programs for GPLs and Marketing Companies on AZ Publications Policy and procedures    
  •    
  •      Influence any ongoing strategic development within GMA and other areas that may impact AZ's ability to deliver industry-leading publications activities in an ethical way    
  •    
  •      Lead effective Monitoring / Auditing process to address key publications compliance risks; propose and implement actions or processes, ensuring all group activities comply with all external regulations and guidelines, and internal policies/procedures    
  •    
  •      Develop benchmarking and publication metrics and act upon metrics for the measurement of compliance and external reputation, in consultation with the Head of Global Publications and the VP, Medical Excellence    
  •    
  •      Lead publication training and awareness across AZ to raise the profile of the Medical Excellence, strategic publications planning, and publications compliance/delivery across HEOR, Epidemiology, RWE and Payer    
  •    
  •      Keep up to date with any internal or external developments (e.g. new regulatory and publication guidelines worldwide) that can potentially impact Publications; disseminate information and develop strategies for meeting new requirements    
  •    
  •      Represent AZ in relevant professional bodies and conferences as an advocate for compliance and sound publication practice    
  •    
  •      Demonstrated performance, budget and resource management skills to effectively support publications for assigned therapy area    
  •  

   Therapy Area and Industry Experience  

 
       
  •      Contribute to medical affairs therapy area coordination teams by sharing strategic thinking and knowledge of broader medical and Publications resources and capabilities    
  •    
  •      Build advocacy for publications through effective relationships with key stakeholders and customers across all relevant SET areas, and by creating the framework to maximize brand value through industry-leading publication activities    
  •    
  •      Work closely and collaboratively with the Head of Global Publications and Global Publication Directors to arbitrate potential ethical issues raised through projects    
  •    
  •      Develop thorough understanding of internal stakeholders in order to further the leverage of clinical and RWE study data (Promotional, Medical Excellence, Payers)    
  •    
  •      Collaborate effectively with Head of Global Publications to influence any ongoing strategic development within clinical development, medical affairs, affiliate companies and pipeline teams and other areas that may impact AZ's ability to deliver industry-leading publications activities in an efficient and compliant way    
  •    
  •      Provide senior level consultancy to CPT/GPTs and others of key importance across Therapy Areas (TAs) and project teams (both Global and US) on publication issues to drive efficient planning and delivery (from a publications perspective) of publications (and key documents supporting investment decisions) that clearly and robustly communicate the support for the label, TPCs and/or decision criteria

  •      Provide visible leadership support to GPLs working in alliances and with joint venture partners and to key alliance partners, ensuring the right scientific and technical skills and capabilities from Publications and driving effective behaviors    
  •    
  •      Assess and optimize resource utilization working with Global Product Directors, Global Medicines Leads, TA VPs and medical affairs leaders    
  •    
  •      Collaborate effectively with medical affairs leaders to support the medical excellence teams in particular medical information to ensure scientific data is available for both medical information queries as well as training materials for the regional and country Medical Science Liaisons and Medical Affairs Department

  •      Ensure team delivers quality publications on time and on budget

Requirements

   Essential Requirements  

 
       
  •      Advanced post-graduate scientific degree with relevant proven experience in pharmaceutical/medical communication/healthcare industry, development, research    
  •    
  •      Demonstrated experience as a medical publications professional and in-depth knowledge of the principles of developing effective publication strategies and plans    
  •    
  •      Broad knowledge of the drug development process, with a focus on integrated strategic publication planning    
  •    
  •      Broad knowledge of relevant disease areas    
  •    
  •      Global Team experience with demonstrated ability to work in a cross cultural business environment    
  •    
  •      Proven ability to set and manage priorities, resources, performance targets and project initiatives in a global business and project environment    
  •    
  •      Proven management and coaching skills, driving performance and long-term development of others in order to accomplish individual, team and organizational objectives    
  •    
  •      Proven flexibility and adaptability to changing regulatory and publication environment by developing solutions that impact beyond the function
