North American Commercial is the ‘face’ of AstraZeneca and MedImmune to our many healthcare clients. They represent many of the most well recognized and respected products in the industry, and build strong relationships with healthcare professionals.

The Executive Director Sales Force Operations (SFO), is part of the US Commercial Operations Leadership Team, reporting to the VP of Commercial Operations. The role leads the SFO functions essential for support of the US commercial organization, and must work across multiple functions (eg, Sales, Marketing, MAPS, IT, etc) to balance the immediate demands with future capabilities needed to deliver the US Business strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

You will be responsible for establishing the vision for the Sales Force Operations department that is aligned with business/brand strategy, as well as MAPS and Customer facing roles. Inspiring the US organization to build commercial capabilities that can deliver against the AZ USLT vision/strategy.

Provide leadership & strategic direction across all functional areas, to include but not limited to: Data Management, Strategic Planning, Reporting & Incentive Compensation, Business Solutions & Support, Capability Delivery & Sales Services, Speaker Programs & Contract Organizations, Sales Force Effectiveness

Work closely with Senior Leadership to optimize the effectiveness of AZ technology investments.

Continuously and proactively identify opportunities for process improvement and effeciency.

Responsible for resource allocation and departmental budget.

Provides stong and visible leadership to the entire team and establish professional development plans.

Reporting Relationship:

Direct Reports – Senior Directors/Directors across seven functional areas

Indirect Reports – Associate Director, Leaders, Senior Managers/Managers, Analysis, and Specialists across seven functional areas


Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required; preferably an advanced degree in relevant field
  • 15+ years of Pharma/Biotech commercial experience; to include sales, sales management, marketing, training and functional area leadership in roles of increasing accountability with a consistent track record of performance success
  • Prior people management experience

Desirable Requirements:

  • Demonstrated understanding of the relevant capability frameworks and their application
  • Diverse experience with impactful capability building within and across large teams
  • Ability to build and sustain strong relationships that influence cross functional team-working
  • Successful 2nd line Sales Management experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication both written and orally
  • Experience in managing external partners and vendors
  • Proven capability in influencing a diverse network of senior leaders and key stakeholders
  • Seen as a thought leader on latest capability building best practice
  • Forward thinking and able to adapt and flex according to business needs and priorities
  • Ability to manage complex projects and meeting tight deadlines
