North American Commercial is the ‘face’ of AstraZeneca and MedImmune to our many healthcare clients. They represent many of the most well recognised and respected products in the industry, and build strong relationships with healthcare professionals.

AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and haematological cancers. As well as other tumour types, these are being targeted through four key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalised healthcare and biomarker technologies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Executive Director, Medical Affairs, Oncology Business Unit (OBU) – External Affairs is a member of the US Oncology TA Leadership Team, and will support both the USMA Oncology Core Medical Teams and the GMA organization within the Oncology Business Unit. The Executive Director, Medical Affairs, OBU – External Affairs is accountable for leading the External Engagement team that includes the NCI Lead, Lead for External Networks, and Professional Society activities in support of the OBU. The initial focus is in the US, but the role will be extended to include ex-US external alliance opportunities in OBU markets. The incumbent therefore has a dotted line reporting relationship into the VP Global Medical Affairs but reports directly to the USMA VP, OBU.

The Executive Director, Medical Affairs, OBU – External Affairs would utilize his/her extensive expertise in oncology, evidence generation alliances management as an internal expert for the Medical Plan Strategies, supporting advisory boards, internal training and consultation. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the development of an External Alliance team along with a comprehensive external engagement strategy.

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Advanced degree in science-related field, such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, or equivalent
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills
  • >3 years managing programs in a team environment
  • Strong knowledge of medical strategy, clinical development, and medical science liaison areas
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment

Desirable Requirements

  • Doctorate in Medicine, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, or equivalent required
  • Existing peer-level KEE relationships
  • Substantial experience in a strategy-setting role and evidence generation within a medical team
  • Global experience within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Working knowledge of FDA requirements (working knowledge of EMA requirements is a plus)
