Description

There is a regular, full-time position available for an ES Cell Technologist I/II in the Cell Biology Service at The Jackson Laboratory.  The position may be filled at the ES Cell Technologist I (pay grade 107) or II level (pay grade 108) depending on qualifications and experience of the applicant.  

The ES Cell Technologist I/II performs all day-to-day processes necessary for the creation of genetically modified mice (GM) in the Cell Biology Service, part of the larger Genetic Engineering Technologies Group (GET) at The Jackson Laboratory.  An ES Cell Technologist I/II is responsible for performing all aspects of GM mouse creation including importation and expansion of mouse ES cell lines and other mammalian cell lines, gene targeting, preparation of ES cells for microinjection, MEF isolation and preparation, materials management, reagent preparation, and equipment maintenance. The incumbent must be willing to work within a gown-in quarantine facility.  

The successful candidate will excel at managing their time to accomplish the complex tasks necessary for maintaining cells in culture.  Attention to detail is expected, as is the ability to function effectively in a team environment.  The incumbent will possess strong communication and troubleshooting skills and will have the opportunity to contribute directly to the success of the Cell Biology Service.  The Cell Biology Service at The Jackson Laboratory is a seven-day-a-week operation; candidate must be willing to participate in a holiday work rotation schedule and have a work schedule that includes weekend days each week.  Additionally, a successful candidate will provide support to all services provided by the Cell Biology Service and any other duties that apply.  The incumbent will be required to successfully apply their skills as a competent ES Cell Technologist immediately upon starting.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in biology or other life science and have experience with mammalian cell culture techniques.  Preference will be given to candidates with hands-on experience culturing and manipulating ES cell or other cell lines.  Experience working in a BSL2 and/or an ABSL2 laboratory is also an advantage.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications:
•   2-4 years hands-on cell culture experience; preference given for experience with mammalian ES cell culture for creation of genetically modified mice
•   Willing to work a schedule that requires weekend days each week (ie Thursday thru Monday or other schedule to include weekend days)
•   Demonstrated ability to plan and carry out complex laboratory procedures   
•   Ability to work with minimum supervision, anticipate and solve technical problems, seek guidance when necessary, possess good interpersonal skills, and work well independently and as part of a team
•   Ability to read, understand, and interpret documents, protocols, SOPs, safety standards, maintenance instructions and procedure manuals for laboratory equipment
•   Proficiency using a personal computer and commonly used applications such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
•   Ability to anticipate project needs and plan carefully to optimize resources necessary for successful project completion
•   Communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information with people representing a wide diversity of disciplines and levels of sophistication
