Job Description:
Scientist/Sr. Scientist Enzymology

Edison Pharmaceuticals is seeking an Enzymologist with at least 5 years prior pharma/biotech experience with a deep understanding of the theory and practice of enzymology and biochemistry. The candidate will perform mechanistic and biochemical characterization of oxidoreductase enzymes, and develop and implement assays for the identification, characterization, and optimization of compounds for drug discovery. The candidate is expected to be able to participate in inter-disciplinary drug discovery projects in an innovative and fast-paced Silicon Valley team environment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Express, purify, and kinetically characterize human oxidoreductases;
2. Design, develop, and implement a variety of assays to characterize small molecule interactions with each oxidoreductase;
3. Develop small molecule/enzyme structure-activity relationships in collaboration with cell biologists and medicinal chemists as a part of the overall hit-to-lead process;
4. Utilize literature and internal data sets to design and test target modulation hypotheses;
5. Biochemical characterization of metabolic pathway enzymes and pathway components using in vitro and in vivo assays.
6. Support the determination of an x-ray structure of small molecules bound to an oxidoreductase.
7. May supervise associate scientists.

Requirements

Qualifications:
1. PhD or equivalent in biochemistry, biophysics, or a related discipline with minimum 2-5 years post-doctoral experience;
2. In-depth knowledge of enzymology in a small-molecule drug discovery setting
3. Extensive experience in the development of assays and bioanalytical methods for quantitating enzymatic reactions
4. Preference for prior experience with oxidoreductases and flavoenzymes;
5. Experience with protein expression and characterization in both bacterial and mammalian cell culture system;
6. Proven track record of striving for high level of inter-disciplinary problem solving and innovation;

Edison Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a privately-held specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the design, discovery, translation, and development of orally available redox-based drugs targeting rare - or orphan - inherited mitochondrial respiratory chain diseases. Edison is in phase 2 clinical development with EPI-743 for the treatment of inherited respiratory chain disorders. Double-blind placebo-controlled trials are ongoing for the following indications: Leigh syndrome, Friedreich's ataxia, Cobalamin C defect, and Undiagnosed Disorders of Oxidation-Reduction. These diseases are highly debilitating, life-threatening, and have no FDA- or EMA- approved drugs available to treat them.
