The Department of Bioengineering is inventing the future of medicine.  UW faculty and students bridge the disciplines of medicine and engineering to drive healthcare forward for those in remote parts of the world and here at home. Students, SCIENTISTs, engineers, and physicians come together at UW Bioengineering to develop innovative and cost-effective approaches to improve health care. Our interdisciplinary teams conduct groundbreaking research spanning five comprehensive research themes: 1) Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine, 2) Instrumentation, Imaging, and Image-guided therapy, 3) Molecular and Cellular Engineering, 4) Systems and Quantitative biology, and 5) Technology for Expanding Access to Healthcare.

The Department is unique at the University of Washington in that it is administered through both the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering. The Department of Bioengineering is located in the W.H. Foege Building, at the corner of 15th and Pacific.  The majority of the staff assignments in the department involve interaction with core faculty, adjunct faculty, staff and post-docs, as well as graduate and undergraduate students.

The Department of Bioengineering currently has an outstanding opportunity for an Electrical Engineer/Programmer.  This individual will support a research project aimed at research directed towards the improvement of quality of life of people with artificial limbs.

The engineer will assist with research data collection and be responsible for signal processing and computational analysis of this data. This position will also write, test, and iterate  algorithms and software for automated data collection and analysis, as well as firmware for microcontrollers, in an experimental setting. This person will interact with participants who have a limb amputation, and work closely with a motivated team of engineers and practitioners committed to enhancing the lives of people with limb loss.

Ideal candidates will exhibit technical creativity to be able to create signal processing algorithms that accurately interpret collected data, as well as the ability to interact with research subject participants in a friendly and respectful manner. Resourcefulness is required to solve technical challenges that are introduced.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Collect data from experiments on research study participants who have a limb amputation. Select and use appropriate computational tools/software and data analysis/modeling techniques to perform computational and signal processing analysis of data. Contribute data to reports and publications on an as-needed basis.

2. Select and use appropriate electrical/computer engineering tools and techniques to develop, test, and iterate the following deliverables in an experimental, laboratory setting. The deliverables directly contribute to research project objectives as they inform prosthetic device design.
- Algorithms and software which recognize activities performed by prosthesis users from wearable sensor data
- Software for the Android platform which collects, logs, and processes data from external sensors
- Firmware for MSP 430 and Arduino microcontrollers

Requirements:
Bachelor's of Science in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related academic discipline
Two or more years related experience, some or all of which may be in relevant academic programs

Additional requirements:
•     Must have strong attention to detail
•     Strong organizational and leadership skills
•     Strong Matlab, Java, and C programming skills
•     Understanding of signal processing concepts such as sampling and filtering
•     Good oral communication skills, ability to work independently or as a team member
•     Good basic engineering and logical thinking aptitude

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

*   Advanced degree in Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related academic discipline

*   More than 1 year experience (total) at a full time job

*   Experience with basis statistics, hypothesis testing, etc
