Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, which is a rapidly expanding company dedicated to discovering innovative cancer therapeutics that transform patients’ lives. We are seeking an exceptionally talented and creative individual who will design, build and implement an automated compound management and integrated screening platform to drive transformation of ARIAD’s drug discovery capabilities.

The ideal candidate should be an expert in all aspects of using lab automation (particularly liquid handling and robotics) to rapidly deliver high quality biological data. This is a newly created high profile cross-disciplinary position requiring excellent communication and team working skills. Consequently you must be extremely comfortable working alongside scientists, non-scientists, senior management and external vendors with the aim of discovering drugs.

This is a highly rewarding and unique opportunity to design, build and oversee a new facility that will accelerate ARIADs ability to discover novel drugs.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, implementation and operation of a state of the art compound archive and automated screening hub to integrate the biological profiling of legacy and newly synthesized compounds.
- Closely collaborate with Discovery, IT & Facilities groups to build and maintain the necessary software and lab infrastructure required for an effective automation hub
- Oversee the design, purchase, validation and delivery of automation from specialist external vendors
- Manage the direction and productivity of a screening facility that routinely generates impactful cellular and biochemical data
- Actively work alongside a broad array of researchers to efficiently deliver quality data that effectively drives drug discovery projects with rapid feedback, design and synthesis cycles
- Collaborate closely with scientists to develop and transfer quality biological assays onto a robotics platform
- Serve as a role model and provide effective automation training to promote the wide-spread use of new technologies throughout the discovery department
- Conduct ongoing outreach to understand and analyze future project requirements and translate these into specifications and deliverables
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and regulatory guidelines governing commercial and scientific interactions with healthcare professionals, payers, advocacy and other business partners.
- Serve as a role model for compliant behavior that is consistent with the mission, vision and values of the ARIAD organization.

Requirements



- 10 years of in-depth experience using innovative robotic systems and lab devices to deliver biological data in an academic or life science organization
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering or biology discipline
- Extensive hands-on experience with lab automation including liquid handlers, robotics, compound management systems. Programming skills are preferred but not required
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, required to overcome unforeseen challenges quickly, decisively and effectively
- A very high level of self-motivation, organization, reliability and independence combined with a strong desire to innovate
- Ability to execute and deliver to tight guidelines and schedules combined with the ability to adjust to changing priorities as needed
- A strong interest in the application of new drug discovery technologies to discover drugs
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills. You must be comfortable interacting with people from a broad array of backgrounds ranging from automation/ software experts and lab scientists through to senior management
- Ability to lead and motivate direct/ indirect reports
- The ability to effectively influence and work in a multi-disciplinary team, in a very fast-paced environment
- Strong commitment to business ethics
- Understanding of, and experience with, regulatory framework applicable to interactions with HCPs, payers, advocacy and other business partners.
