   As aDirector, Therapy Area Information Science
you'll play a pivotal role within our Information Practice Unit.  

   Part of Biometrics & Information Sciences, ourInformation Practice group
has a novel structure designed to drive creative and optimal use of internal and external sources of information in design and decision making.

   Our information specialists are embedded in every late stage drug project To add value to the portfolio and support our development of meaningful medicines. It champions Good Information Practice to drive efficiency and maximize information re-use. Our information specialists are embedded in every late stage drug project with:  

  •      Information assets only become valuable when used - that is why Information Practice exist:    

   IP has oversight and drive the active re-use of our clinical data and information assets for drug development purposes, by:  

  •      Development & execution of the TA Information Strategy to maximize value across the portfolio    
  •      Information leadership and Delivery, by being embedded in the late-stage drug projects    
  •      Information sharing across AZ R&D, in external collaborations and with wider community.    

   IP also provides a mechanism to capture and retain knowledge;  

  •      Key Drug Project decisions and critical documentation (Project Memory)    
  •      Outcome of peer review and investment decisions of development proposals    
  •      How and who has re-used shared clinical data, and the knowledge and value generated    

   Biometrics & Information Science unit (B&I) is the home of statistical, programming and information experts for late stage drug development. Focused on getting results for patients, our experts seek to answer drug development objectives and reduce uncertainty in product development, driving better decisions for AstraZeneca.  

   B&I is part of our Global Medicines Development (GMD) division.GMD
(Global Medicines Development) drives late-stage development of our innovative pipeline, transforming exciting science into valued new medicines and ensuring patients around the world can access them.  

Main Duties and Responsibilities

   Your mission is to maximise the value of Information for drug development in the TA, by having oversight and drive the active re-use of our clinical data and information assets, and providing means to capture and retain knowledge.  


   Accountable for proactive development and execution of the global TA Information Strategy  

  •      Proactively engage and influence key TA stakeholders internally and externally, and build strong alliances to leverage and promote optimised utilisation of data, information and knowledge.    
  •      Strategy shall balance near and longer-term needs and opportunities, based on holistic understanding of external and cross-functional factors, and strategic alignment with R&D and TA. Updated as needed, but at least yearly. Content to consider:      
    •          Key TA stakeholders and customers, and their needs (reflecting TA strategy e.g. new disease areas or cross-project needs, upcoming transitions from Early), and information needs related to upcoming pipeline goals).        
    •          Current state of Information leadership and provisioning in the TA (broader than IP, e.g. ongoing Intelligence to TA and GPT, cross-project initiatives, and current CISD delivery in each project)        
    •          Information Opportunities and Threats: relevant potential information sources from across functions within AZ, and externally, including Industry collaborations.        
    •          Options and Evaluation/prioritization        
    •          Roadmap for delivery        

   Accountable for IP delivery and value creation across the TA portfolio, through leadership of TA IP staff, partners and suppliers  

  •      Proactively engage and influence cross-functional TA stakeholders to identify needs and opportunities that drive demand for IP services.    
  •      Provide leadership and orchestrate cross-functional Service delivery and follow-up, to achieve tangible outcomes that is contributing to meeting and exceeding goals, recognized for its value by key stakeholders inside and outside of B&I. IP Services include:      
    •          Leadership of Information Sharing, the team handling requests for additional analysis/output (IEMT), Project Memory, and Information Transfer for partnering and divestments. By demand, can also lead Design Teams, quantification of Benefit-Risk assessments (BRAT) and probability of technical success (PTS).        
    •          Information management and Provision: Clinical Competitive Intelligence and Information provision to e.g. TPP, design assumptions and options, contextualized interpretation, and information to support submissions and Regulatory and Payer response.        
  •      Ensure appropriate levels of support by IP staff to the drug projects, applying business priorities and working with other TA Information Directors as required.    
  •      Systematic and proactive collaboration with partners and suppliers (e.g. other functions inside AZ that provide Intelligence and Information Sources + external industry collaborations and vendors).

   Accountable, on behalf of B&I, for leading external collaboration projects, and TA requests for Information Sharing.  

  •      Including having oversight of how and who has re-used shared clinical data, and the knowledge and value generated.    

   Accountable to capture and retain knowledge over time in the TA, about the outcome of peer review and investment decisions, for development proposals  


   Drive future innovation and continuous improvement, through delivery in GMD, TA, B&I and IP initiatives  

  •      Foster an environment in which innovation can flourish and satisfy the innovation needs of R&D through leading improvements in productivity, quality, competitive positioning and customer focus and growth.    
  •      Advise strategic programmes on appropriate Information Science approaches and strategies and educate senior information owners on best practices and processes.    
  •      Lead change and improvement initiatives.

Essential Requirements

   MSc in a Life Science, Computer Science or Information Science Excellent communication and facilitation skills - with proven ability to influence strategic decision making Extensive experience in the application of information and knowledge management within pharmaceutical, biotech or technology industries Experience of drug development and the Therapy Area Experience of leading in a complex global organisation Business Acumen and experience of influencing and controlling budgets
