As a Director/Senior Director, Strategy & Operations, US Oncology in Gaithersburg, MD you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives. North American Commercial is the ‘face’ of AstraZeneca and MedImmune to our many healthcare clients. They represent many of the most well recognized and respected products in the industry, and build strong relationships with healthcare professionals.

AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and hematological cancers. As well as other tumor types, these are being targeted through four key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

The Senior Director, Strategy & Operations, will lead a team (3-4 Direct Reports) responsible for driving US Oncology strategic planning, operational effectiveness, launch excellence, above-brand marketing initiatives, and performance through successfully partnering with the Oncology Leadership Team (OLT). This role will be a member of the Oncology Leadership Team and is a critical cross-unit aggregator and coordinator of information encompassing all the US Oncology Franchises (Women’s, Hematology, EGFR Lung, and Immuno-Oncology (IO)). The ideal candidate will have the ability to understand core business goals and establish strategies, processes, or programs, to advance franchise objectives. The Senior Director, Strategy & Operations will be expected to communicate changes in prioritization and decision-making efficiently, and be capable of carrying out multiple projects while effectively prioritizing tasks according to the needs of the US Oncology business.

Oncology Leadership Team (OLT)

  • Accountable for developing the over-arching US Oncology strategy, with input from VP Oncology and OLT, to accelerate AstraZeneca’s position as the industry-leader in Oncology
  • Participate as a member of the OLT; share accountability for managing the agendas and actions arising from meetings with US Oncology Medical Affairs ‘Chief of Staff’
  • Serve as a liaison between the OLT, Oncology Task Force, USLT, and franchise extended teams to ensure brand team deliverables meet expectations
  • Accountable for developing Oncology franchise scorecard and provides oversight for brand scorecards, ensuring alignment to all Commercial and US Business Objectives and priorities; tracking tools for USLT /OLT to measure progress of key deliverables
  • Provide oversight and guidance (scorecard/priorities/key deliverables) to monitor performance/progress across all functions that are aligned to Oncology: Marketing, Sales, Medical Affairs, Companion Diagnostics, Market Access Patient Strategies, Commercial Operations, Commercial Learning/Development, Insights and Analytics, Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory
  • Work closely with unit finance partner to ensure business planning timeline and due dates are synchronized with financial business calendar and that information shared between Finance and Business Planning is efficiently and effectively available/transferred
  • Develop Senior Leadership and ad-hoc presentations as needed

Operational Effectiveness

  • Manage complex projects and use extensive network to solve organizational issues and lead through change management across the USLT and OTF
  • Consolidate, align and keep track of all key aspects of US Oncology brand strategic and operational planning in partnership with the other franchise planning leaders resulting in the development of an integrated unit strategy and aligned operational plans
  • Ensure all Strategic, Brand Planning, and Launch Planning processes and tools are well understood and effectively utilized by brand team members such that all deliverables consistently meet or exceed expectations for time and quality
  • Identify operational efficiencies and drive operational excellence through best practices across Oncology franchise leveraging ROI inputs into investment decisions
  • Provide oversight and guidance to the Oncology sales planning and governance teams across the promoted portfolio, ensuring proper timing and prioritization of all action requests and communications that impact field sales

Above-Brand Marketing Initiatives

  • Lead Oncology 2.0 capability development and roll-out inclusive of Key Account Management, Business Acumen, and Customer Engagement
  • Deliver enterprise approach to oncology GPO educational programs
  • Lead pan-oncology congress strategy and execution (ASCO, ESMO, ONS, NCCN, etc.)
  • Oversee ‘Center of Excellence’ support for advisory boards and speaker programs across Oncology franchises
  • Develop and oversee Launch Excellence capability and pull-through to oncology franchise teams
  • Provide strategic support for Brand team-specific portfolio review activities, and provide insights on the content to enable identification of cross-portfolio issues and opportunities as part of the cross-portfolio analysis and review for Sr. Leadership
  • Lead oncology contracts management team (~3 FTEs) that provides contract support across the oncology business

Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree with a scientific/technical degree
  • 8+ years’ pharmaceutical experience
  • Shaping, developing & successfully implementing
  • Strong organizational skills and a high degree of attention to detail
  • Project and process management expertise
  • Understanding of forecasts, budgets, financial processes and tools
  • Cross-functional team experience
  • Experience in leading through influence in a matrix organization
  • Experience in strategic planning processes and tools
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (written and oral), organizational, relationship building, and consulting skills

Preferred:

  • MBA or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years commercial oncology experience, preferably within the US market
  • Strategic consulting experience within healthcare highly desirable
  • Finance experience
  • Brand planning and marketing experience
  • Understanding of the sales planning process, including knowledge of customer segments
  • Experience in an alliance or strategic partnership
  • Understanding of Decision Analysis techniques
  • Understanding of Process Engineering techniques
  • Experience in translating business needs into process improvements and implementations
  • Results-orientation with ability to develop creative and simple solutions to complex problems
