The Director, Packaging Technology in Gaithersburg, MD will lead the packaging function within Global Tech Ops in Biological Operations. The position will be responsible for building and developing an organization to coordinate packaging design for secondary and tertiary packaging and lead packaging engineering activities at contract sites and within AstraZeneca. The position is responsible for obtaining and implementing new package requirements, as well as maintaining quality of existing packages. The group is responsible for planning, designing, problem solving, and qualifying packaging materials and shipping containers. Additionally, the Director Packaging Technology will oversee the testing of the packaging components and packaging product to ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory guidelines; specifying materials to support product development and commercial operations; provide technical support for controlled artwork on printed components; support qualification of shipping systems and be accountable for launch supplies for global product launches.

This position will also provide technical support for any packaging equipment acquisition and development activities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leading the development and qualification of secondary, and tertiary packaging solutions.
  • Lead development of packaging strategy as part of cross functional project teams responsible for developing package systems.
  • Design and select packaging components. Write technical reports to the support and qualify the component selection process.
  • Write specifications for packaging components.
  • Responsible for packaging qualification and technical support for global launch supply
  • Responsible for cold chain qualification of commercial packaging configurations to ensure product quality in transit.
  • Technical integration and approval of artwork into packaging components suitable for appropriate commercial markets.
  • Work with and travel to contract sites to jointly develop packaging systems, distribution and handling methods and any activities involved in property transporting the drug throughout the supply chain.
  • Coordinate technical personnel as directed or requested in order to investigate, specify, and improve and qualify packaging component equipment at the company or third party site.
  • Ensure the components are designed for the specific intended use with drug product, and secondary packaging components.
  • Ensure specifications are written with specific detail to ensure a quality component.
  • Be a member of multidisciplinary project teams and be called on to lead teams for tasks that are focused on packaging issues.
  • Provide critical technical analysis of the packaging components and systems.
  • Act as a resource and subject matter expert to other package engineers and departments.
  • Provide clarity and create organized action plans in a fast-paced, high-visibility work environment.
  • Lead and coordinate vendor interaction supporting material supply reliability and component quality
  • Provide technical leadership in packaging equipment design and implementation of new equipment solutions
  • Provide on market commercial support related to biological packaging
  • Responsible for qualifying packaging processes appropriate for relevant regulatory markets.


Essential Requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise and leadership in pharmaceutical packaging development and commercialization.
  • Prior success building and leading a packaging engineering group
  • Demonstrated innovative problem solving skills
  • Experience launching commercial products globally is highly desired
  • Experience commercializing a pharmaceutical/ medical device or consumer products is a plus
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively in cross functional teams and effectively influence others
  • Self-directed and able to contribute individually and as a member of a team. Excellent time/project management, planning and organizational skills, including the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work in a complex, dynamic, global environment and willingness to travel when necessary.
  • BS or higher degree in Packaging Engineering or relevant engineering or scientific area required.
  • Significant experience in packaging engineering required.

Desirable Requirements

  • Masters Degree / MBA
  • 15+ years of experience is preferred.
