We are headquartered in Novato, CA, 25 miles north of San Francisco with additional office space in Brisbane, CA. This position will be located in the Novato and/or Brisbane offices of Ultragenyx.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Technical Operations Officer, the Director of Operational Excellence will be responsible for the development and implementation of the operational excellence programs and strategies within Ultragenyx's Technical Operations organization. Integral to the position’s success is his/her ability to be a highly effective change leader consistent with the Ultragenyx values and to work both strategically and tactically. While functionally aligned in Technical Operations, the person will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders such as Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Program Management, Human Resources, Finance, Legal, Commercial Operations, IT and Program teams to facilitate cross-functional business process improvements aligned with our corporate values and objectives. Ultragenyx uses a contract manufacturing and development approach, which will involve collaborating with external stakeholder groups as well.

Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

•   Establish the Technical Operations Operational Excellence (OpEx) function. Develop Tech Ops operational excellence capabilities.
•   Install a culture of quality and continuous improvement (CI). Develop, update and maintain a roadmap plan for the CI program
•   Ensure key Tech Ops business processes and process capabilities align to and enable Ultragenyx’s strategy.  Define and articulate linkage and right balance between business strategy needs, process improvement function and key initiatives.
•   Establish and nurture strong working relationships with key partners and stakeholders.
•   Build OpEx capabilities by providing expertise and guidance to Tech Ops personnel and cross-functional business partners to identify opportunities and improve operational performance
•   Define and implement approaches for identifying, assessing and prioritizing business process needs and improvement opportunities in service of Tech Ops operational excellence
•   Establish core process management and operational excellence methodologies (Lean/Six Sigma) and standard set of tools and templates to develop and implement process solutions.  Drive adoption of standard process guidance documents, including process maps, working documents, tools, and templates.
•   Address identified gaps and assess process improvement and operational excellence opportunities.
•   Collaborate with key partners to define and implement business performance metrics and reporting
•   Develop and maintain standard tools and templates to support the tactical application of business processes
•   Support Tech Ops in project/program prioritization and strategic projects


•   BA/BS required (MBA desirable) with 12-15+ years’ experience leading OpEx functions in supply chain, manufacturing, quality or related business area
•   Lean and/or Six Sigma certification highly desirable
•   Proven success in establishing and leading high-performing OpEx functions in a very dynamic biopharma or related manufacturing environment
•   Previous experience leading a group or business unit, including the management of budgets, timelines and resources
•   Demonstrated ability to establish, engage and enrich a culture of quality and continuous improvement. Proven experience as change agent having successfully mastered challenging change tasks.
•   Deep expertise in operational excellence concepts and tools, such as value stream mapping, business process redesign, Lean/Six Sigma, modeling and simulation, cycle time reduction, etc.
•   Experience sponsoring, leading and realizing key, strategic functional initiatives with effective application of planning and communications
•   Advanced working knowledge of GMPs, CMC (Chemical Manufacturing Control)
•   Experience partnering with CMOs/CROs (Contract Manufacturing and Research Organizations)
•   Ability to think and operate both strategically and tactically; can seamlessly switch to meet the needs of a given situation
•   Leads with a responsible, quality-focused mindset
•   Effective executive communication skills: verbal, written, and presentation
•   Willing to travel domestically and internationally, as needed
•   Excellent learning agility and willingness to grow
