Job Description

Amgen is seeking a Media Relations Director at its main headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA to join the Corporate Affairs team and report to the Executive Director.

This individual will lead Amgen's long-lead media strategy, responsible for planning and placing compelling stories about Amgen's science and therapeutic areas in long-lead consumer publications. They will interface with numerous cross-functional partners to identify and deliver compelling narratives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and execute enterprise-wide long-lead consumer media strategy
  • Coordinate with R&D, product and other Amgen communicators to create compelling narratives, editorial and syndication calendars
  • Create targeted media storylines and supporting collateral
  • Develop strong relationships with long-lead consumer outlets
  • Pitch and successfully place long-lead media opportunities
  • Media train key Amgen spokespeople
  • Coordinate interviews for key Amgen spokespeople
  • Manage and direct public relations agency partners to assure maximum impact and assistance in reaching desired communications goals and objectives
  • Domestic travel up to 20%

Requirements

Basic Qualifications  

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Public Relations experience

OR

Master's degree and 7 years of Public Relations experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 9 years of Public Relations experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Biotechnology, pharmaceutical or other highly regulated industry communications experience, including corporate experience preferred
  • Excellent consulting, writing, editing (photo/video/text), presentation and communication skills
  • Strategic and creative thinker with ability to develop actionable programs that integrate soundly with business objectives
  • Working knowledge of and history of interaction with long-lead healthcare journalists and outlets
  • Ability to interface professionally with corporate leaders and managers
  • Ability to think quickly, analytically and creatively to accommodate a dynamic communications environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiastic, team player and self-starter; serious commitment to hard work and excellence
