Description

Oversees, directs, and integrates all activities within Takeda California Informatics group operations.  Partners effectively with all Research and G&A leaders to ensure integrated and aligned informatics solutions facilitate the advancement of drug discovery programs. Uses strategic leadership skills, technical expertise and change-management acumen to address informatics problems and needs.


• Provides and supports state-of-the-art aligned and integrated cheminformatics and bioinformatics solutions to discovery teams
• Partners effectively with the VP of Discovery Research, Senior Director of Medicinal Chemistry, Director of Computational Sciences, Director of Systems Engineering and research leaders to ensure integrated and aligned informatics solutions facilitate the advancement of drug discovery programs.
• Strategically plans and collaboratively leads new scientific endeavors with other department heads and staff to create and implement informatics solutions across the organization
• Builds and supports comprehensive and streamlined data population, extraction and analysis tools that integrate internal and external sources of biological, crystallographic, physicochemical and chemical data
• Provides single source informatics tools and solutions that minimize redundancies and maximize efficiencies across the supported applications
• Establishes and maintains clear and robust business rules and informatics capabilities for chemical and biological registration and data capture
• Provides ad-hoc support for flexible biology data processing
• Builds and maintains a streamlined process for creating, validating and implementing new biology assay templates
• Rapidly develops new tools to capture data from emerging assay formats
• Build and support ELN interface with external assay vendors to allow facile and seamless data transfer and analysis
• Responsible for optimizing content and maintaining project data files, updated daily and available to all scientists
• Maintains and enhances content for the Pipeline Pilot “Web Port” or similar set of cheminformatics tools, and integrates this content with other research informatics applications
• Formulates and executes on innovative informatics ideas and strategies that enable more efficient advancement and identification of drug discovery projects
• Establish and maintain an environment of value-driven service of people and software
• Provides strategic leadership and technical expertise in support of research informatics solutions and direction to ensure site goals are met and that the overall Informatics research plans of the company are met
• Engages global affiliates in international corporate strategic plans as appropriate
• Is responsible for ensuring departmental budget in accordance with Takeda policy
• Is responsible for ensuring the integrity and security of scientific data
• Sets solutions/projects and goals priority and allocates resources accordingly
• Oversees and manages the activities of Informatics and is accountable for their performance and development
• Leads and manages solutions/projects involving multiple groups both local and remotely (software engineers, scientists, IT, end-users, vendors) to complete solutions/projects
• Directs change tracking systems (i.e. enhancements, bug fixes), source code revision control, testing, and release
• Directs annual departmental goal setting and performance evaluations

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics with thesis, publications, postdoctoral experience, and minimum 10 years industry experience, OR
• MS in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and minimum 14 years of industry experience, OR
• BS in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and minimum 17 years of industry experience
• Internally and externally recognized expert in Informatics
• Proven ability to manage and complete technical projects, by liaising with scientific and operational groups (e.g. Finance, IT, etc.), and within a specified budget and time line.  
• Demonstrated independent thought/creativity in science and success in coordinating and executing research to further corporate goals
• In-depth understanding of information systems security and access control
• In-depth understanding of all functional drug discovery processes and the tools to support operations
• Experience with capturing 3D structural information and providing searching methodologies (2D and 3D) for such data
• Experienced supporting document management systems (e.g. Sharepoint, eRooms, Documentum)
• Experienced with commercial and public content providers (e.g. Reaxys, SciFinder, DiscoveryGate, Prous Integrity, ACD, PubChem, PubMed, Ingenuity)
• Experienced with product and solutions offerings from leading life science software providers
• Experienced with software development methodologies and tools
• Knowledge and understanding of common molecule representations/formats
• In-depth understanding of web technology and distributed computing
• In-depth understanding and demonstrated hands-on experience designing and implementing relational database management systems, preferably with Oracle and PL/SQL
• Familiar with several object oriented programming and scripting languages, desktop application development and both client and server side web application development.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
