The Director/Advisor for the Global External R&D group must be able to establish an effective internal network with senior leadership, understand evolving governance structures and be capable of utilizing networks to inform decision making both within and across Business Units as needed.   It is also incumbent upon this individual to understand the internal clinical, discovery and technology portfolio in order to be able to identify and prioritize high-value external assets.

The Director must possess outstanding problem solving, project management and leadership skills, and must be highly organized, being able systematically to multitask the concurrent processing and implementation of all active programs in order to ensure Lilly does not miss any critical licensing opportunity.   The ideal candidate will have a broad scientific proficiency in order to conduct the evaluation of assets across the areas of interest for Eli Lilly and Company.  

Key Objectives and Deliverables:
• Leadership in the identification and rigorous, objective scientific and technical assessment of potential partnership opportunities, including the identification of key issues and appropriate expertise to facilitate resolution.
• Lead the development of relationships within the external pharmaceutical community including in pharma and biotech companies, research institutes, academic and other scientific organizations.
• Mapping of the external competitive landscape across key areas of interest.
• Seamlessly operate within the GERD Regional group and the requirement to work interactively and collaboratively with GERD OUS colleagues located in EU, Japan, China and India.
• Plan, participate and lead partnering forum activities in support of partner interactions and activities with internal stakeholders as well as decision makers.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications   
• Master of Science with a 5 year industry experience or M.D./Ph.D. in a discipline related to pharmaceutical drug discovery or pharmaceutical sciences; e.g. , Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Cell Biology.
• Demonstrated scientific knowledge with primary focus in an area of interest and adjuvant therapies and broader understanding of Lilly core therapeutic areas.
• Minimum of 10 years experience in the pharmaceutical or related industry.
• Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical discovery, development and Intellectual Property processes.

Additional Skills/Preferences   
•   Importantly, the Advisor/Director will have clear understanding of the global pharmaceutical standards of care, critical relationships, and technical breakthroughs to provide Lilly with competitive access to potential opportunities of strategic interest.
•  Understanding of the portfolio of internal clinical and discovery programs and technologies to be able to readily identify high value complementary external assets.
•  Demonstrated strong database and computer skills.

Additional Information   
The Global External Research and Development function is a virtualized R&D group within Lilly that takes an entrepreneurial approach to helping Lilly deliver medicines across all markets in which it has a presence. This is achieved by seeking commercially viable early and late stage assets, and marketed products for potential in-licensing, partnering and acquisition activities, and also by generating additional value from internal Lilly and externally identified assets via novel financing models in disease areas of high unmet medical need. The group has expertise across the value chain of drug discovery and development, e.g., in new target identification and mechanisms of disease biology, new platform technologies (inc. Chemistry platforms), in vitro and in vivo models of safety and efficacy, through to early phase clinical development, where it has the ability to take compounds through to proof of concept studies via its Chorus unit.

The GER&D Director will be responsible for the identification, evaluation and coordination of external innovation partnering for assets that meet critical patient unmet needs and support the growth of Lilly.  

The GER&D Director in work closely with the Senior Director of GER&D in the landscaping of opportunities, and the detailed assessment of external assets, including analyses of technical merit and strategic fit, review of intellectual property status, and the generation of constructive technical feedback for external parties.   This individual will lead and/or participate in visits to external companies with members of Business Unit leadership, CBD, CFIB, OAM, functional groups, and/or GER&D as appropriate, and lead the communication of technical evaluations to internal and external stakeholders.   Similarly, s/he must cultivate relationships within the external research community including pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, as well as research institutes, academic groups and other relevant scientific organizations.   Importantly, s/he will have clear understanding of pharmaceutical standards-of-care, the regulatory environment, as well as keen insight into the critical partnerships and technical advances that will provide Lilly with competitive access to all potential opportunities of strategic interest.

• 30-40% travel is anticipated (including OUS)
• Position reports to the Senior Director of the Global External R&D organization
