We are headquartered in Novato, CA, 25 miles north of San Francisco, and we also have an office in Brisbane, CA, 10 miles south of San Francisco, and Basel, Switzerland. this position will be located in Brisbane.

Position Summary:

The Director of Commercial Training will build and implement the commercial management, managed markets, and field commercial specialist training programs focused on their critical role in ensuring commercial success.

The training function will use in-depth clinical and commercial knowledge, as well as general field-related experience, specific product and marketplace knowledge, to facilitate commercial and clinical education training sessions for the commercial team.

The commercial training lead will work closely with Marketing, Field Commercial, Human Resources, Market Access, and Medical/Legal/Regulatory to design, build, and implement training programs to support commercial teams.

Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
•   New Hire Training & Development:
•   Lead the design, development, and delivery of training modules for new field personnel and/or newly promoted personnel, where appropriate
•   Design, update, and communicate in-field training objectives and materials to commercial organization
•   Plan and execute comprehensive training program encompassing in house, web based and self study modules leading to robust knowledge level and continuous improvement
•   Refine new hire training road-maps to reflect current needs of the product messaging for all audiences
•   Facilitate workshops effectively in a clear and interactive manner
•   Evaluate new hire curriculum for continuous improvement for Ultragenyx products
•   Work with the Leadership to ensure new hire readiness

•   Tenured Field Training & Development:
•   Evaluate training needs annually or as needed
•   Work in the field with audiences to determine needs; in collaboration with management, help provide coaching and pull-through of training initiatives (where appropriate)
•   Consult with Management on needs of the field
•   Facilitate the learning process via workshops, webinars, conference calls, one-on-one coaching sessions, and written communications to ensure field personnel are competent in the areas of product knowledge, compliance, presentation skills, customer service, and communicating the value of Ultragenyx disease areas, products and services
•   Plan, develop and conduct workshops at regional meetings and national meetings in collaboration with Commercial Leadership and regional training
•   Participate in curriculum design and workshop development for advanced training
•   Work with cross-functional teams to set objectives for continuous improvement of commercial effectiveness; message delivery, knowledge, customer skills, etc.

•   Additional Duties:
•   Lead the development of training materials for new indications, new products, competitors, etc.
•   Participate in ongoing assessment of training needs with the field force, marketing, and medical
•   Liaison with vendors, internal and external partners and provide appropriate training management where necessary
•   Provide on-going training on new policies and procedures, as needed
•   Serve as training lead at meetings


•   8 years’ or more in Learning and Development preferred
•   Experience in orphan diseases/biotech a plus
•   Training experience preferred

•   Computer literacy with appropriate software programs, Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat is required.
•   Proven leadership skills/high level of accountability
•   Exceptional negotiation, facilitation, presentation, and decision-making skills
•   Travel required for meetings and field visits
•    Bachelor’ degree required
•   Leader trained or certified in training and skills development a plus
