Job Description

Relypsa is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of non-absorbed polymeric drugs to treat disorders in the areas of renal, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The Director of Biology / Pharmacology will play a central role in helping to define the strategic direction of drug discovery and development at Relypsa. Under the guidance of senior management of the Company, he or she will be responsible for planning and managing discovery and non-clinical research activities in the fields of biology and pharmacology. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of the drug discovery and development process, with a proven track record in leading cross-functional teams and moving compounds into the clinic.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Contribute to the scientific perspective and leadership in support of discovery efforts at Relypsa, Inc.

•Support building and delivering a sustainable flow of development candidates for clinical development consistent with agreed strategies

- Define, evaluate and exploit therapeutic targets to identify leads
- Evaluate potential drug candidates for in-licensing

•Ensure the appropriate conduct of Biology and Pharmacology studies and high-quality reporting to regulatory authorities from IND to launch

•Play an active role in the evaluation of potential drug candidates for in-licensing

•Contribute to portfolio prioritization and critical assessment of risk, cost and timing for each program

•Effectively partner with all functions and disciplines (Chemistry, CMC,  toxicology, clinical, regulatory, commercial, business development) to achieve corporate objectives

•Support a culture of innovation that promotes teamwork and optimizes performance

- Work to attract, retain and develop a world-class research team
- Maintain scientific quality and data integrity
- Secure state-of-the-art research tools and capabilities allowing Relypsa to maintain industry competitiveness and facilitate discovery and development activities

•Select and manage relationships with an adequate number of third party vendors to carry out experiments and studies, while managing delivery risk.

Requirements


•PhD in Biology or Pharmacology.   10-15 years of experience in both discovery and early development settings

•Deep understanding of drug discovery and development.  Demonstrated track record in leading cross-functional teams and moving compounds into the clinic is a requisite

•Knowledge and experience of the fields of renal, cardiovascular or metabolic diseases and ability to quickly adapt to new therapeutic targets

•Experience in polymer drug discovery and development is preferred

•Exceptional verbal/written communication, time/resource management, interpersonal, organization and leadership skills are also required.
