Job Description

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish National Cancer Institute (NCI) research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. The National Cancer Institute, NIH has committed to establishing a national cancer research community-accessible cryo-EM user facility that will be managed and operated by CRTP/FNLCR. The purpose of the facility is to enable the collection of high quality cryo-EM images, with minimal delay between request for access and data collection from prospective users who can show that they have quality specimens ready to image at high resolution.  This facility will begin to address the pressing national and regional need that US structural biologists have access to advanced microscopes capable of supporting high resolution cryo-EM studies.

JOB DESCRIPTION/BASIC FUNCTION
The Computational Electron Microscopist will:
Program and maintain workflows for data transfer of large datasets from Kiros/direct detector to different servers
Set up and maintain networks and instrumentation for data storage
Work closely with a team of microscopists to support high throughput imaging of cryoEM specimens on an FEI Titan Krios with direct detectors

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
Possession of a Doctoral degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or related discipline from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or 8 years of related experience in lieu of degree
Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U. S. equivalency.
No work experience required beyond the doctorate is required
Experience with Linux scripting
Good written and verbal communications skills
Experience in transmission electron microscopy
Must be able to obtain and maintain Security Clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
Experience with programming in Python or Pearl or similar
Experience with computer networking
Experience with cryo-electron microscopy
