Clinical Science Director/Associate Director Waltham, MA.

At AstraZeneca, we work together across global boundaries to make an impact and find answers to challenges. We do this with the utmost integrity even in the most difficult situations because we are committed to doing the right thing. We continuously forge partnerships that help pursue world-class medicines in new ways, combining our people’s exceptional skills with those of people from all over the globe.

Emerging Innovations Background

The Emerging Innovations Unit (EIU) is a virtualized, externally-focused R&D group within AstraZeneca’s Innovative Medicines & Early Development (IMED) Biotech Unit that takes an entrepreneurial approach to delivering new medicines to patients. This is primarily accomplished through leveraging external science via our pioneering ‘open innovation’ platform (http://openinnovation.astrazeneca.com/), drug repositioning, incubating novel technologies and project partnering & spinouts.

Whilst many companies, including AstraZeneca, have chosen to focus their R&D efforts in a small number of core therapeutic areas, EIU is driven most predominantly by scientific merit, medical need and novelty. Our mission consists of generating additional value through repurposing and repositioning AZ assets into new disease areas and partnership. Our small, entrepreneurial group seeks to complement its existing broad expertise to evaluate new opportunities and extend its network of strategic alliances, collaborations and partnerships. The EIU resides within and works in partnership with the Strategic Partnering & Alliances function of the IMED Biotech unit.

Summary description

In this position, you will have the unique opportunity to join our Emerging Innovations Unit (EIU), in Waltham MA, as a leader of Clinical and Translational Science. You must hold a medical MD degree, have evidence of a strong translational and scientific background, and ideally have Pharma industry experience.

Essential qualities for this senior-level person are to be innovative, passionate about science and enthused by the prospect of working with top academic and industry collaborators in a virtual R&D organization. In this position, you will be responsible for identifying new potential indications from the analysis of internal drug projects and datasets, as well as external publications and functional omics analyses, and for championing their advancement through translational and early clinical research via a network of collaborations with top academic labs, industrial partners and CROs. You will be key in supporting new and ongoing AstraZeneca Open Innovation initiatives through the review and development of proposals with investigators, working with them to design and progress their studies through to results.

This role requires a special individual who possesses a translational clinical and basic science mindset and training, as well as the agility to initiate and lead multiple projects in a virtual research and development unit. You must understand clinical proof of principle trials in their widest context with basic science knowledge in at least one key therapeutic area (e.g. neuroscience/psychiatry, metabolic/diabetes, cardiovascular/renal, oncology).

Job Purpose

  • Identify and progress new product opportunities from analysis of internal and external drug projects and via an externalized network of collaborations with e.g. CROs, academic labs and industrial partners.
  • Develop and lead pre-clinical and clinical validation project plans through internal or external resourcing.
  • Deliver quality decision points and risk mitigation required for project progression through pre-clinical and into early clinical development.
  • Support the ongoing academic and industry collaborations and any future AZ Open Innovation initiatives through review of proposals, development of full proposals with investigators, and collaborating with investigators on successful proposals.
  • Support out-partnering or spin-out of successful projects that are not in AZ core areas of focus or otherwise not prioritized into the internal IMED portfolio.
  • For MD: provide medical oversight for some of the Emerging Innovations portfolio of clinical studies

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

You will be responsible for initiating and leading projects, including responsibility for setting and maintaining the highest scientific standards, developing the discipline to meet future demands, and engaging and managing the efforts of top academic collaborators. Specifically:

  • Evaluate, recommend and manage external collaborations (including externalised networks with CROs, academic labs and biotech companies) in order to progress validation project plans
  • Contribute to and influence the strategic direction of own projects and initiatives
  • Seek and apply best practices (internally and externally) in processes, data analysis, and decision-making in leading project teams in a virtual environment
  • Implement and manage all aspects of external studies with CROs and investigators in support of portfolio projects (collaborating on experimental design, contracting, compliance, material transfers, etc.)
  • Ensure that IP assets of the project are developed, managed and protected
  • Ensure, together with functional leaders and collaborators internally and externally, that the projects are appropriately resourced and that resources from functions are managed effectively
  • Advise the unit on new core science and/or disease area opportunities within area of expertise, both within and outside of existing EIU group strategy
  • For MD, provide medical oversight for some of the Emerging Innovations portfolio of clinical studies.
  • Contribute to the EIU group strategy and the overall success of the wider Strategic Partnering and Alliances and R&D functions

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • MD with at least 2 years of post-training experience.
  • In-depth understanding of biology/pharmacology in its widest context with specialist knowledge in at least one disease area, preferable more, applied proactively to influence business objectives.
  • Desire and willingness to work beyond core disease areas of expertise.
  • Demonstrated success in leading teams in the design and delivery of both translational and clinical projects, and contribution to translational and clinical development plans.
  • Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills.
  • Highly developed influencing skills and a proven ability to work globally and cross-functionally.
  • Ability to act as an external ambassador and to influence external organizations and key opinion leaders to progress projects and enhance the image and reputation of AstraZeneca.

Key Behaviors

  • Scientific Expertise: A deep, scientific understanding of at least one therapeutic area, and the ability to translate experiences to unfamiliar therapeutic areas.
  • Drug Development: A broad knowledge of early (Phase I/II) clinical development.
  • Innovation: The ability to identify and apply new thinking, ideas, technology and practice that creates business value for the organization.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability: The ability to see the benefits of different positions, to change plan if circumstances dictate, to modify views in light of new or conflicting evidence.
  • Initiative: The ability to see and seize opportunities, initiating actions that go beyond a normal response to a situation or request from others, with no task too small.
