Manager, Cell Production

Summary: Manages the activities of the Cell production group to help achieve company goals and standards, and cultivate an environment of continuous improvement. Major focus is on driving excellence in operational and financial results via continuous improvement of all operational processes and cost saving initiatives. Responsible for delivering high quality cell-based products and supporting cell production needs for EFC cell-based screening group and PathHunter Product Operations in a timely and cost effective manner in a safe working environment.

Essential Functions
In this position, the successful candidate will supervise the operations team of EFC cell production in the Assay Operations group. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of cell-based production for both products and supplies cells for the screening group. Duties will include:
•   Assists the VP, Cell-Based Assay Operations in managing the EFC cell production team and their team members in the preparation and implementation of operating plans and strategies consistent with business objectives such as improved TAT, on-time delivery, and achieving pre-set gross margin targets.
•   Manage departmental records, including Standard Operating Procedures, inventory and all other department files, records and documents. Ensures published training objectives are met for all direct reports and training records are complete.
•   Ensure the Cell-Based Production organization is prepared to execute on volume, product transfer, and product development initiatives including support of New Product Introductions.
•   Work closely with R&D to ensure smooth and efficient product transfer.
•   Implement activities for the team to minimize and/or eliminate back order issues for all cell-based assay products include assay ready products, cell lines and/or bioassay cells, develop cost improvement plans, improve product delivery performance, efficiency, throughput, and implementing process changes.
•   Work with company’s quality management systems and external QA scientist to ensure data meets internal QA/QC criteria and is completed on time.
•   Support activities for hiring and retaining a diverse, highly qualified staff and for providing career coaching, growth and personal development for direct report employees.
•   Developing strategies for streamlining work flow, reducing costs, and increasing capacity and efficiency.
•   Provide tracking of historical cell culture metrics, inventory, margin, backorder, managing safety stocks, and adherence to key performance indices.
•   Performing other duties as required and assigned.
•   Daily duties include: day to day management of Fremont cell production Operations team, data analysis and QA/QC; manage cell production group; product inventory levels; cell production needs for screening group; maintenance of new and existing software applications and tools; method development to support cell-based production.


Required Education/Experience/Competencies
•   B.Sc. or Masters in the life sciences, cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry or a related discipline plus at least 5 years of cell-based cell production in an industrial or academic laboratory setting which includes expertise in culturing various cell lines.
•   Experience with various aspects of cell production, trouble shooting cell culture issues and challenges, including managing inventory levels, timelines and product quality and documentation.
•   Previous experience supervising diverse laboratory scientific personnel.
•   Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills.
•   Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
•   High attention to detail.
•   Time management.
•   Organizational skills.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position manages all employees of the cell production team in Fremont and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within the department.

Work Environment
Office and laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines and routinely uses standard laboratory equipment. This position operates in a BSL1/2 laboratory setting. There is potential for exposure to human tissues and fluids.

No travel is expected for this position.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are regular business hours Monday through Friday. The ability to work a flexible schedule (including evening and weekend work) may be required depending on business needs and job duties.
