Job Description

Xcell Biosciences is a San Francisco-based life science start-up company that has developed a proprietary primary cell culture platform for use in research, drug development, and precision and regenerative medicine applications. The technology delivers simple, standardized culture of primary cell types from a variety of patient tissues and blood, including expansion of tumor cells and immune cells. This novel platform enables direct disease insights ex vivo, with use in drug development applications ranging from novel cancer biomarker discovery to cell-based immunotherapy lead optimization. The company is focused on tools to improve primary cell expansion, transfection and control of cell state, and is generating revenue from the Avatar system launched in 2017.
We are looking for a team member to lead our efforts leveraging our proprietary technology and reagents towards improving transfection efficiency and post-transfection viability of primary cells. The candidate will be responsible to support the development and advancement of programs from research to manufacturing and should be able to manage their work efficiently, maintain operational excellence, develop and meet project timelines as well as interact with both internal groups as well as outside CMOs or experts as needed. In addition, the role will have the opportunity to work with other scientists (both internal and external partnerships) as well as field application scientists to develop and release new products and protocols.

Requirements

Essential Responsibilities

1) Develop and execute work-plans that include experiments towards improving primary cell transfection outcomes, including viability and efficiency

2) Work independently or with minimal supervision on defined projects for development of human/mammalian workflows and products for primary cell culture and modification

3) Design and execute laboratory experiments with minimal guidance

4) Perform data analysis, interpretation and reports for R&D and management, as well as develop strategies for optimization and troubleshooting

5) Experience supervising projects across organizational groups to advance project goals is a plus

6) Develop processes for protocol or experimental scale-up and execution of development projects

7) Document development work in concise reports and provide project updates in written and oral presentations

8) Support maintenance tasks and new technology evaluations for laboratory instrumentation; interact with outside vendors / suppliers

9) Collaborate effectively with other scientists to help advance the company’s research and business goals

Qualifications

-Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or biology related discipline.

-Demonstrated product development experiences (method and/or product development in cell or molecular biology is a plus)

-Excellent skills in cell and molecular biology with a minimum of 2 years of industry experience

-Experience working with human primary cells - specifically immune cells or iPSCs - is a plus

-Extensive experience with various cell transfection technologies

-Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment coupled with the emerging challenges of a rapidly evolving field; previous supervisory experience a plus

-Highly motivated, independent self-starter, but also a team-player

-Resiliency and flexibility around shifting work streams and timeframes

-Focused, organized, and meticulous with excellent attention to detail and record keeping

-Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
