Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Medical Evidence and Observational Research (MEOR) organization within GMA is accountable for the delivery of GMA-led global strategic studies, interventional and observational, required to generate the evidence to build the confidence on AZ therapies Additionally, MEOR designs and delivers observational, studies and manages all externally sponsored research for the whole organization, including the Science Units (GMD, iMeds, Medi), and GMA.

As CVMD Head, Epidemiology, you will be accountable for the leadership and management of a group of Epidemiology Scientists within MEOR. You will be aligned to one or more therapy areas or disease areas to serve as the key Epidemiology contact and strategic partner to other key clinical/medical and commercial functions (e.g., iMeds, Medi, ECD, GMeds, GMA, GPPS including GPEP) to manage assigned portions of the portfolio by ensuring excellence in the delivery of medical evidence, and epidemiology knowledge and observational research.

You will manage and develop a group of Epidemiology Scientists within the designated therapy/disease area(s), optimizing individual and team performance, ensuring appropriate deployment to drug projects and other MEOR functional activities to build and maintain excellence in medical evidence, including epidemiology and observational research, capabilities. You will have management responsibilities for a wide range of activities, including competence development, training, optimal use of resource and skill, and internal company awareness of epidemiology and medical evidence. You will drive recruitment, retention, resource planning, development, and people management of Epidemiology Scientist resource to deliver the agreed project objectives, supporting global teamwork and driving productivity gains for competitive advantage. You will be accountable for developing the capability of the Epidemiology Scientist positions, which are responsible for contributing to and executing against Science Unit and GMA strategies and plans generating the medical evidence required to develop medicines that fulfil patient and society unmet needs and generating the post marketing and real world evidence required by regulator, payers and physicians to facilitate patient access and appropriate use of AZ medicines.

As TA Head, Epidemiology, you will develop and maintain an observational research strategy for the therapy areas or disease areas for which they are responsible. You will be a standing member of the Therapy Area Coordinating Unit (TACU) providing medical evidence leadership and support for the GMA TAVP, contributing to overall GMA and company strategies for products in the designated therapy/disease area. You will have significant governance responsibilities for medical evidence studies, both global and local, including a key role on the TA aligned Medical Affairs Review Committee (MARC) and similar review forums to ensure that the highest quality standards are met in project deliverables.

These responsibilities require an extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry with broad and deep knowledge of medical evidence generation and epidemiology activities and how they relate to product development and commercialization processes at all life-cycle stages as well as the ability to influence internal partners and external stakeholders. You will have a role in shaping AstraZeneca’s approach to developing the medical evidence required to ensure regulatory approvable, accessible and reimbursable products. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong leadership capabilities.

Through leadership of the TA Epidemiology team as well as individual contribution, you will ensure the development and delivery of high quality, scientifically robust medical evidence on time and on budget. Ensure effective resourcing of projects across the portfolio. Lead the recruitment and allocation of appropriately skilled Epidemiology scientists to projects to ensure delivery of value evidence to clinical programs to time, budget and quality in accordance with performance targets. Work closely with the MEOR Leadership Team and TACU, GMTs, Payer Teams and Clinical Project Teams in considering project resourcing. Drive forward innovative approaches to deliver medical evidence, including methodologies, partnerships, and delivery modalities. Lead strategic initiatives to progress MEOR, GMA and general medical evidence priorities. Develop and maintain an Epidemiology skills development strategy, proactively identifying and delivering against gaps (e.g., define training needs and capabilities improvement/maintenance activities). Work with Capacity Management to achieve accurate resource forecasting, analysis and solution building to resource projects efficiently and flexibly, considering people development and succession planning. Ensure individuals are motivated, skilled and developed, providing expertise and guidance to support creation and implementation of relevant Individual Development Plans. Act as an ambassador for MEOR and GMA functions, providing clarity on the roles and delivering appropriate advocacy whenever possible to ensure company-wide understanding and best usage of the function. Ensure compliance with policy and SOPs. Provide technical and strategic input to projects via coaching of direct reports and through leadership review of deliverables (e.g., MARC). Provide strategic input to the vision and development of a world class Medical Evidence and RWE capability as a member of the MEOR Leadership Team. Support the VP MEOR in establishing a close collaboration and interaction with relevant functions in GMD, GMA, GPPS including GPEP, and MCs to develop AstraZeneca’s approach to plan for and meet the needs of regulator, payers, physicians and patients.

Provide expert line management and coaching of Epidemiology Scientists to continuously raise level of competence for AstraZeneca. Deliver continuous improvement for the Epidemiology Scientist roles within the MEOR/GMA and Clinical operating models, including optimizing the MC collaborations, as well as vis-à-vis clinical/regulatory. Identify and manage master service agreements for external providers. Advance AstraZeneca’s reputation and expertise in Epidemiology policy, planning and evidence generation by participating in appropriate external forums e.g., special interest groups of relevant organizations. Line management of the members of the MEOR RWE organization.

Promote and encourage communication within and across departments. Recruit, retain and develop personnel through skills development and creation of opportunities for related staff. Provide performance management, performance assessment and reward proposals for direct reports. Ensure policy administration and implementation within the organization. Maintain an environment that attracts, develops and retains highly qualified employees. Ensure that SHE standards are adhered to for direct reports including appropriate work-life balance. Carry out effective succession planning. Manage a team of between 5 – 10 Epidemiology Scientist as well as contract resources as needed.

Requirements

Essential Requirements
  • Master’s degree OR Ph.D; University degree in Epidemiology or Public Health, or related discipline such as Health Outcomes Research.
  • Ten+ years of relevant experience, including a minimum of five years in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology.
  • Extensive experience working with primary and secondary data, both US and global.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical and commercial drug development processes
  • An understanding of the therapeutic areas related to AstraZeneca´s products
  • Experience leading and managing in a global, matrix environment, including direct personnel management.
  • Ability to interact externally with key customers, including congress presentations.
  • Persuasive communicator in English with a proven ability to work collaboratively in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience, leading, promoting, motivating and empowering others to accomplish individual, team and organisational objectives
