in Mt, Vernon, IN, you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives.

The Buyer/Senior Buyer is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating sourcing and purchasing of materials and services. Also responsible for exercising judgment in procurement duties in connection with assigned commodities and services using strategic purchasing techniques ensuring that the Company receives maximum value with respect to price, quality, and delivery, while following the Company’s Purchasing Policy and code of ethics.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Operational – Buyer

  • You will be responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating the sourcing and purchasing of direct and indirect materials and services.
  • You will work with Global Strategic Sourcing, other divisions, sister sites, and local personnel to identify improvement opportunities in cost, quality, material, and service.
  • You will maintain good working relationships with vendors and potential suppliers with respect to developing and improving sources of supply considering reliability, quality, and price. Serve as the primary linkage between suppliers and users and facilitates issue resolution and joint process improvement activities.
  • You will develop a relationship with site customers to ensure Procurement is involved at an early stage to influence the buying decision and optimize negotiating leverage.
  • You will monitor and ensure compliance with corporate contracts, preferred vendor usage, and the BMS Corporate Purchasing Policy.
  • You will proactively identify financial and/or operational risks and opportunities associated with category purchases. Incorporate knowledge or industry trends, technology, and sourcing strategies (i.e. leveraging, supplier partnership, reverse auctions, tandem ordering) to optimize total value to BMS.
  • You will challenge existing sourcing conventions and develops alternative sources and sourcing procedures to reduce costs and improve the performance of the Supply Chain
  • You will continuously review the performance of vendors with regard to quality, delivery and price.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned to support Supply Chain and Procurement.

Operational – Senior Buyer

  • You will negotiate contracts for the procurement of required indirect materials, capital projects and services from approved suppliers. Establish strategies to improve supply chain, solve shortage issues and strengthen supplier relationships
  • You will work cooperatively with and informs internal stakeholders of the purchasing process and best practices to maximize the value received for goods and service expenditures.
  • You will lead the cross functional team that works at defining the commodity strategies under their responsibility to ensure Procurement involvement at an early stage to influence the buying decision and optimize negotiating leverage.
  • You will negotiate and agree to Terms and Conditions/Local Contracts; Manage contractual compliance and contract execution; Manage and resolve potential claims/litigious situations with suppliers; escalates the major contractual non-performances.
  • You will own the sourcing and contracting strategy for a specific category or categories of Indirect procurement spend including market and industry analysis, category and supplier segmentation, sourcing activities, analysis, negotiations, contracting and implementation, while also focused on delivering the Company’s Supplier Diversity objectives and the overall Total Cost of Ownership.
  • You will lead, control and drive improvement in the transactional buying processes for respective category areas in order to capitalize on opportunities, drive productivity, and deliver quality and service requirements for all business stakeholders
  • You will manage supplier relationships to encourage supplier innovation and maximize value contributions to the Company through effective sourcing and contracting processes. Responsible for leading discussions with critical suppliers around long-term objectives and strategies, innovation and technology advances, and potential investment decisions.
  • You will develop written procedures for routine job responsibilities and keep them current.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned to support Customer Relationship + Procurement.


  • You will execute work in compliance with GMPs, site policies, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). You will immediately report issues that could affect delivery of products to customers.


  • You will maintain a safe work environment by following all Health and Safety policies and procedures; immediately report potential unsafe conditions to supervision. You will use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary.
Typical Accountabilities
  • You will conduct activities and interactions consistent with Company values and in compliance with the Code of Conduct and supporting Policies and Standards relevant to your role. Complete all required training on the AZ Code of Conduct and supporting Policies and Standards on time. Report potential issues of non-compliance.

In addition, for Managers and Project Team Leaders:

  • You will ensure and monitor compliance by team members and third parties by (a) positively reinforcing the Code of Conduct and all relevant AstraZeneca Policies and Standards, (b) ensuring completion of all required training, (c) fostering a culture of openness in which employees are comfortable raising questions or concerns, and (d) immediately addressing and reporting, as appropriate, instances of non-compliance.
  • Manager Accountabilities at AstraZeneca include Ethical Conduct and Compliance, Team Management, Performance Management, Individual Development Planning, Talent Management, Recruitment, People information, SHE accountabilities, and Fiscal and Financial awareness.
  • Leaders with accountability for GXP areas are expected to understand the legal and regulatory requirements of their roles in providing appropriate resources (which could be human, financial, material, facilities, and equipment) to maintain the Quality system and continually improve its effectiveness.


Essential Requirements
  • BS or BA degree in Business, Finance, or equivalent with knowledge of procurement and/or supply change concepts required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of business processes and their interrelationships with procurement methodologies and Customer Relationships.
  • Strong project management skills required to gain commitment and mobilize others within the department and cross-functionally, to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and creative problem solving skills. Able to manage multiple priorities and use sound business judgment for decision making.
  • Demonstrates strong negotiation skills. Develops a fact-based strategy; can respond appropriately to unanticipated situations.
  • Proficiency in standard software applications e.g. SAP, MRP system, Ariba, Microsoft Office, and Onyx (CCE).
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of financial principles, budgeting processes, and fundamental drivers of sales and profits.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced team environment and adapt to changing business needs.
Desirable Requirements
  • Three years of experience as an operator in a production environment; pharmaceutical experience a plus
