As the Business Development Manager (BDM), Oncology, Scientific Partnering and Alliances (SP&A), AstraZeneca, you will be a key member of a team which is responsible for establishing the business case for and negotiating oncology in- and out- licensing, consortia, joint venture, collaboration and other agreements for the AstraZeneca early clinical development and pre-clinical development organisation. The SP&A team plays a key role in presenting business cases to internal and external stakeholders and ensuring that value is generated for the organisation through transacting on cases selected by Senior Management.

As a junior member of the team, you will have primarily a supportive role in developing the business case, building term sheets and negotiating major complex transactions and will be expected to be able to lead minor routine transactions, with assistance from other functions and the Business Development Executive Director as per need. As the BDM, you will also be a key ambassador for AstraZeneca in its external interactions as well as helping senior members of SP&A team and Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED) to identify future partners, maintain relationships with current and potential future partners and ensure that AstraZeneca is viewed as the partner of choice for best in class and/or first in class licensing opportunities, innovative collaborative opportunities or externalisation projects.



  • Under the direction and with the support of the BD Executive Director, evaluate and advise internal stakeholders on the most appropriate type of agreement to cover specific collaborative and partnering opportunities
  • Under the direction and with the support of the BD Executive Director and cross-functional deal teams (IP, legal, finance, R&D) negotiate and evaluate the terms and complete agreements


  • Complex, major deals: Under direction and with the support of the BD Executive Director, establish the business case for potential major collaboration opportunities (primarily alliances/ collaborations, and licensing/ acquisition deals) with the aim to ensure that the opportunities will generate value for the business and prospective partner and that this value can be clearly communicated to internal and external stakeholders:
  • Critically interpreting analysing and synthesing non-confidential and confidential data gathered from third parties, desk sources and internal AZ knowledge to build credible and succinct business cases allowing Senior Management to make decisions.
  • Working with the international, multifunctional teams, where appropriate, for the technical, commercial and corporate evaluation of new opportunities. Such teams may include senior scientific, technical and commercial representatives from across the AZ business landscape
  • Building strong relationships with the functions to ensure the ready availability of expert support for evaluations
  • Ensuring that the evaluations are thorough and objective, with clear opportunity and risk assessment
  • Build and maintain an effective and broad network of external contacts and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs).
  • Managing the relationship with the potential partner in a timely and professional manner; ensuring that AZ remains competitive in the discussions
  • Routine, minor deals: Take an independent leadership role in evaluating smaller scale opportunities, seeking the advice and input of the BD Executive Director and others as needed.


Participation in the early identification, evaluation and triage of external licensing and partnering Opportunities

  • Support the BD Executive Director in working with other key internal R&D stakeholders (mainly, the Strategy team) to identify the best (value) research, collaborations and in-licensed compounds, technologies and companies which are aligned with business strategy
  • Support the BD Executive Director in pro-actively reaching out to, leading and productively maintaining the dialogue with business development individuals and/or other key commercial contacts in external organisations and companies
  • Maintain a strong network of academic and small biotech companies with regular interactions and discussions within the therapeutic area and ensure integration of the networking activities with other related activities within the organisation


  • As per need, manage minor alliances, with the support of the BD Executive Director as needed
  • As per need initiate, lead and manage re-negotiations and terminations as necessary for minor alliances, under the direction or with the support of the BD Director as needed


  • Degree in a relevant scientific discipline or alternatively significant relevant experience and knowledge of oncology from working in the life science sector.
  • Postgraduate pharmaceutical, biotech industry or technology transfer office experience
  • Basic understanding of key principles of contracts, deal structures; intellectual property, value drivers and valuation principles of relevance for licensing, collaboration and related transactions.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to effectively understand and act on complex information under high time pressure situations
  • Strong communication and team player skills
  • Professionalism, integrity, and gravitas
  • Project management experience.
  • Preferred- Second degree in a relevant scientific or business discipline
