Job Description

The global PK Sciences (PKS) department has major contributions to drug discovery and development within Novartis and is divided geographically with several groups in Europe, North America and Asia. Our main task is the evaluation of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects of new molecular entities throughout the entire drug development value chain. For this the department relies on various disciplines with expertise in project management, (pre)clinical pharmacokinetics, bioanalysis, drug metabolism and isotope synthesis.

Job purpose
As a member of the Biotransformation group you will be responsible for quantitative description of new chemical entities, elucidating metabolic pathways and explaining metabolite structures formed in vitro and in vivo (animal and human) in different biofluids, excreta and tissues for Novartis discovery and development compounds.

Major accountabilities
You will develop bioanalytical methodologies for metabolic clearance assessment, metabolite profiling and elucidate metabolite structures by LC coupled with online/off line detection and mass spectrometry. Additionally you will develop quantitative assays for the determination of drugs and metabolites in biological matrices and application of these assays in support of pharmacokinetic studies in animals and humans. You will contribute to build hypotheses, plan and execute tailored experiments, maintain the laboratory environment/instruments, and support the development of new technologies. You will ultimately have to support the monitoring and execution of outsourced studies for Biotransformation and Bioanalysis studies.

Job dimensions
Our state-of-the-art laboratories use pioneering analytical techniques and IT infrastructure, provide an optimal work environment where 3-4 expert associates with no managerial accountability are working as a team to support local project needs. As part of your project responsibilities you will collaborate with multiple drug discovery and/or development teams to define and execute the (pre)clinical bioanalytical and biotransformation strategy.

Requirements

Ideal background
• Degree in analytical/biochemistry (MSc, PhD or equivalent) with experience in Biotransformation and Bioanalysis in an industry setting
• Excellent (hands) experience with LC-mass spectrometry and metabolite profiling, metabolite structure elucidation and quantification.
• Deep understanding of drug metabolism in in vitro and in vivo models
• Good attention to detail, an analytical investigative and questioning nature, with an innovative solution-oriented approach
• A sharp and objective intellect, experienced in balancing big picture thinking with an investigative nature, drilling into detail as appropriate
• Well developed interpersonal skills with good presence; experienced presenter and communicator
• A self-starter and decision taker; open, confident and persuasive, succeeding through influence
• Good planning, prioritisation, problem solving and organisational skills
• Resilient, energetic and enthusiastic; responding constructively to challenging new ideas and inputs
• Team player, ability to be flexible and adapt to a changing environment.
