Job Description

The Willsey Lab investigates the foundational biology of psychiatric disorders with a commitment to high-throughput design, hypothesis-naive approaches, and biological validation.

The lab is seeking a bioinformatics programmer who will apply computational procedures to resolve a variety of analysis and research issues. This position involves developing and utilizing computational tools to analyze and interpret biological or other research data. The Bioinformatics Programmer will be working on epigenetics datasets. They will work on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of a variety of factors, and assist in additional analyses as needed to achieve research objectives.

Responsibilities
•   Assist in developing methods to parse and analyze data generated by genotyping microarrays and high-throughput sequencing.
•   Install and implement bioinformatics tools on a high-performance cluster
•   Process samples through bioinformatics pipelines
•   Take responsibility for the storage and archive and integrity of experimental data
•   Manage transfer of data between labs and archives
•   Develop methods of automating the analysis of biological data
•   Present new code in a releasable format (e.g. GUIs, user-friendly, simple installation)
•   Develop methods to present the results of genomics analysis.
•   Assist in developing methods to parse and analyze data generated by genotyping microarrays and high-throughput sequencing.
•   Install and implement bioinformatics tools on a high-performance cluster

Requirements

Required Qualifications:
•   Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
•   Demonstrates excellent attendance and professionalism
•   Proficient at Python, Perl, or R programming
•   Excellent written and oral communication skills
•   Interest in learning about genetics
•   Attention to detail
•   Ability to pick up new techniques quickly
•   Excellent problem solving skills
•   Familiarity with statistical analysis
•   Systems administration with UNIX/Linux
•   Proven ability to work within a team to accomplish specific goals at specified times.  
•   Proven record of excelling in a large team environment (15 plus individuals) but still possess an independent work ethic
•   Outstanding references

Preferred Qualifications:
•   Experience with R, python, C/C++, Java, html, PHP, SQL programming
•   Experience with high performance clusters
•   Background in biological data processing, especially in human genetics
•   Background working with epigenetics datasets
•   M.S.  in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
