The Cancer Genomics Research (CGR) laboratory in Gaithersburg, MD, is a fast-paced, high-throughput genotyping and sequencing facility dedicated to the support of molecular, genetic and epidemiologic studies for investigators at the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Epidemiology & Genetics. We are seeking a highly motivated senior bioinformatician to join the Operations division at the CGR to serve as a manager and technical lead for the Bioinformatics group.

The Bioinformatics Manager and their team will be responsible for the following key deliverables: Data management and analysis of whole-genome, exome, transcriptome, methylome, microbiome, and targeted sequencing data generated by multiple technologies, including Illumina, IonTorrent, Pacific Biosciences, and others; Data management and analysis of whole-genome, methylation and targeted genotyping data generated by multiple applications, including Illumina Infinium and HM450, qPCR and others; Development, execution and continual improvement of reliable software pipelines in collaboration with laboratory staff, investigators and analysts, to perform quality control analysis, sequence alignment, variant and genotype calling, and annotation of data for a wide variety of applications, including familial, population-based germline and somatic analyses; Dissemination of data to DCEG investigators and other collaborators, including adequate technical and scientific annotation required for interpretation. Manage posting of data sets to public data repositories (dbGaP) as required based on NIH genomic data sharing policies. Progress on projects will be reported on a regular basis and incumbent may be responsible for presenting data at meetings, conferences or other venues.



- Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college/university in a scientific field such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, or computer science or six (6) years related experience in lieu of degree.

- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- In addition to educational requirement, a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible job related experience including one (1) year of experience in a leadership capacity.

- Experience managing complex programs or large production units is required.

- Hands-on experience in processing and analyzing sequencing, genotyping, expression and other data utilizing R/Bioconductor (including quality and biological assessment) is essential.

- Familiarity with diverse primary sequencing tools (e.g. BWA, bedtools, GATK, Bowtie, IGV, muTect, VarScan) and annotation tools (e.g. snpEff, Annovar, SIFT, PolyPhen) with the ability to benchmark new tools as they become available in order to improve current pipeline.

- Programming experience in Python, Unix shell (Bash), Java scripting or similar.


- PhD in computational genetics, bioinformatics, biostatistics or equivalent preferred.
- Hands-on experience with commercial and open-source bioinformatics and genomics analysis software (IVA, GoldenHelix, Galaxy) is desired.

- Ability to incorporate multiple data sources for use in downstream analysis, including microarray genotype data, epidemiological data, publicly available data sources (e.g. TCGA, ENCODE, 1000 Genomes, COSMIC, ESP) and diverse genomic annotations.

- Experience in project management and data delivery, sequence analysis, experience managing large datasets and computation, proficiency in a relational database management system (Oracle/MySQL or similar), experience in the field of molecular and population genetics.
