Job Description

The mission of the Data Science and Information Technology Program (DSITP) is to develop an enterprise-level, consolidated information technology infrastructure that provides exceptional IT capabilities to the Frederick National Labs for Cancer Research (NCI-Frederick/FNLCR) in support of basic, translational, and clinical cancer and AIDS research.  The Advanced Biomedical Computing Center (ABCC) is a part of the DSITP within Leidos Biomed.  The ABCC develops state-of-the-art technologies in large scale data modeling, analysis and integration. The center is a technological hub of translational scientists with expertise in biology, chemistry, imaging and informatics. ABCC supports the scientific research at the Frederick National Lab by helping translate scientific questions to technical solutions for cancer and biomedical research. The Imaging and Visualization group (IVG) at the ABCC supports the NCI/NIH research community by developing imaging related computational infrastructure, software, algorithm, and visualization solutions.


Develop scientific software for imaging and visualization applications using common programming language such as C/C++, JavaScript, and Python
Translate requirements, implement and develop imaging and visualization related algorithms into applications and workflow using tools such as ITK, OpenCV, and other open source imaging libraries
Maintain, develop, and document imaging and visualization software and computational infrastructure
Work in a team to facilitate efficient usage of computational and hardware resources such as PACS, databases, digital archives, etc.


To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or electrical engineering from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education).
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible relevant experience
Experience working with and developing digital image analysis software
Ability to independently learn new technologies in a rapidly evolving environment
Ability to multi task and prioritize workload to meet established goals
Strong C/C++ programming and debugging skills
Experience with version control such as git and subversion and development within a project team environment
Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field is highly preferred
Experience solving real-world algorithmic programming issues
Experience performing image segmentation, image registration, and statistical analysis on scientific data
Experience with 3D Volume Rendering (Raycasting) of biomedical images
Experience with Machien Learning and Deep Learning
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as Oracle, PostgresSQL, MongoDB, etc.
Ability to develop customized web application for image and information visualization using open source libraries such as d3.js and cornerstone
