Associate Scientist/Scientist, Pre-formulation/Formulation

Dart NeuroScience LLC (DNS) is a privately held Delaware Limited Liability Company with offices in San Diego, CA.  DNS will discover new technologies and develop new therapies to help maintain cognitive vitality throughout life.

Dart NeuroScience, LLC (DNS) is building a drug product formulation department and is looking for a scientist who has significant experience with pre-formulation, solid state characterization (salts screens & polymorph screens) and physiochemical evaluation of candidate drugs to enable DNS’s discovery and development programs. The successful candidate will be actively involved in the characterization of late stage discovery compounds to support medicinal chemistry, DMPK, and pharmacology efforts by identifying compounds with appropriate drug-like properties and providing acceptable formulations for in vivo evaluations of these compounds.  Experience with preclinical and early-stage clinical formulations and HPLC method development is highly desirable.  The ability to work effectively in a collaborative, interdepartmental team environment is essential to this role with the expectation that this scientist will interact with all disciplines in the drug development pipeline, including discovery, CMC, pre-clinical, clinical and regulatory.  

Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform physiochemical characterization of drug candidates
• Determine optimal polymorph and/or salts of candidate molecules
• Evaluate formulations appropriate for animal studies
• Perform excipient compatibility studies to enable clinical formulations
• Develop phase appropriate analytical methods
• Participate in drug discovery team meetings and provide data & guidance to help teams move compounds forward
• Work closely with preclinical groups and provide preclinical formulation support (when necessary?)
• Work closely with rest of formulation department to move compounds through late discovery into the clinic

Requirements

• A Ph.D. or MS in pharmaceutical sciences, analytical chemistry or chemical engineering with at minimum of 3 years (PhD) or 5 years (MS) of relevant experience in a pharmaceutical/biotechnology company
• Demonstrated experience with successfully characterizing small molecule, oral dosage drugs in early stages of development programs; participation in programs that went to the clinic is not required, but would be very helpful
• Expertise with instrumentation required for physiochemical and pre-formulation evaluations (e.g. DSC, TGA, DVS, XRPD, HPLC)
• CNS drug development experience preferred, but not required
• Experience developing HPLC methods is required
• Understanding of cGMP requirements desired, but not required
• Ability to work with a wide range of disciplines required to get a drug from discovery through clinical development
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills required
• Ability to work in a fast-paced organization with diverse project teams and personnel
• Expertise demonstrated by published scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, society participation, regulatory filings and patents
