As one of the world’s premier biotechnology companies, our mission is centered on delivering life-changing products that advance world health, and help fight and cure disease. As an Associate Scientist I/R&D Associate II in Gaithersburg, MD, you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives.
We’re constantly pushing the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients, with a passion for discovery and a pipeline to show for it. We’re pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas including oncology, respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and infection and vaccines. And we’re industry-leading in immunology, protein engineering and translational science. We offer a unique and strong collaborative network as part of the AstraZeneca family, as together we explore synergies between small and large molecules.
MedImmune has a dynamic environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. We attract top minds, and we nurture and build top talent.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
This position is a hands-on, laboratory-based role that supports early-stage formulation development activities of novel protein-based molecules (fusion proteins/bispecifics/antibody drug conjugates/peptides) and monoclonal antibody molecules. Formulation development activities include stability testing and characterization of routes of degradation of proteins in liquid and lyophilized formulations under accelerated temperature, refrigerated storage conditions and under agitation and freeze-thaw stresses in a variety of containers. Laboratory activities include buffer and protein solution preparation, pipetting and aseptic operations in a biosafety cabinet. Analytical methods that are used routinely include HPLC (reversed-phase HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography), UV-visible spectroscopy, HIAC and MicroFlow Imaging sub-visible particle counting. Biophysical instrumentation (differential scanning calorimetry, titration calorimetry, fluorescence, circular dichroism) will occasionally be used for protein structural characterization. Activities in support of Drug Product manufacturing may be performed, which include mixing studies, process robustness and tech transfer activities.
The candidate will work under general supervision and his/her work will be reviewed for accuracy and soundness of technical approach. The candidate will make detailed observations, summarize results in tables and figures, document data into lab notebooks, and analyze data and interpret results. Candidate will also present data and results at group and department meetings and contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts and patent applications. The individual should be familiar with and be able to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for experimental operation and data recording.
Future responsibilities will include participation and contribution to one or more project teams and research initiatives that are related to formulation science of proteins and novel molecules in the MedImmune pipeline.
R&D Associate II: MS or BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, bioengineering, chemical engineering or a related field with 0-2 years (Masters) or 2-5 years (Bachelors) experience in the pharmaceutical industry as appropriate (biotechnology area preferred).
Associate Scientist I: MS or BS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, bioengineering, chemical engineering or a related field with 2-5 years (Masters) or 5-8 years (Bachelors) experience in the pharmaceutical industry as appropriate (biotechnology area preferred).
Candidate must be able to perform independent laboratory work and apply effectively chemistry, biochemistry and pharmaceutical knowledge and principles to the design and execution of laboratory experiments. Candidate will be expected to contribute to or provide solutions to technical problems and think creatively. Experience with protein/peptide formulation, lyophilization and characterization are a plus. Additional experience with the above biophysical techniques is a plus but not required. Prior lab experience with SEC, UV-vis spectroscopy, HPLC are a plus. This is a laboratory-based position and the candidate must be familiar with laboratory operations (weighing chemicals, balance operation, pH measurement, buffer preparation, lab safety) while adhering to established procedures.
Candidate must have strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced dynamic environment. Good verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail and organized work habits are essential.
