Job Description

Zymeworks is seeking an Associate Scientist, Conjugation Chemistry with background in a chemical or biological discipline and extensive experience in protein biochemistry to join us in the discovery and development of Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs).  The Associate Scientist, Conjugation Chemistry is a lab based position and will participate in multiple facets of ADC discovery including antibody conjugation, analytical characterization, and functional assays. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to mentor our junior laboratory staff and will independently design, execute, and interpret experiments and communicate their results. In addition, the candidate will keep abreast of the scientific literature and build recent advances in the ADC field into their work.  This position reports to the Senior Scientist in Conjugation Chemistry and will be based in Vancouver, BC.

Key Responsibilities

• Develops, optimizes and applies protein conjugation protocols to generate antibody drug conjugates, antibody fluorophore conjugates and related molecules.
• Develops, optimizes and applies purification methods for proteins and protein conjugates.
• Characterizes proteins and protein conjugates using methods including HPLC, LC-MS, SEC, SDS-PAGE, CE-SDS, CE-IEF, Octet, flow cytometry, DSC and ELISA.
• Performs tissue culture, cellular cytotoxicity assays, and other cell-based assays.
• Acts as a resource in a recognized area of technical expertise within the department and mentors more junior colleagues in the lab.
• Communicates and works closely with the Medicinal Chemistry and Assay Development groups to ensure a collaborative work environment and the seamless flow of data, knowledge and materials.
• Carries out complex experiments using advanced techniques. Reviews experimental process and data with supervisor and/or coworkers as appropriate. Presents the progress of experiments to others.
• Prepares written reports and performs independent analyses of complex experiments.  
• Contributes to scientific literature and participates in scientific conferences.
• Ensures adherence to best practices and explores opportunities for continuous improvement.  

Requirements

• MSc in a relevant scientific discipline with a minimum 2 years related scientific experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with Antibody Drug Conjugates is highly desirable.
• Experience in protein expression and purification.
• Experience with protein characterization using modern analytical techniques.
• Knowledge of modern bioconjugation techniques.
• Proven interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a member of cross-functional team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Good organizational skills and the ability to work effectively in a high paced, fast changing environment. Results-oriented.
• Effective oral and scientific/technical writing communication skills.
