As an associate director/Principal scientist or , Neuroscience in Waltham, MA you’ll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients’ lives. IMED (Innovative Medicines and Early Development) focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas.  The Neuroscience iMED delivers the AZ Neuroscience portfolio of small and large molecules, using internal and external resources. Current areas of focus include addiction, ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, Autism spectrum disorders, epilepsies, Huntington’s Disease and Parkinson’s disease. Focus technical areas include cell biology including application of iPS/stem cells in drug discovery, application of cutting edge human genetics to drug discovery, in vitro/vivo electrophysiology and circuitry related to drug action, and biochemistry as related to mechanistic and biomarker aspects of a therapeutic.  

   Main Duties and Responsibilities:  

   As an Associate Director (Career Level F) /Principal Scientist (Career Level E), you will report to the Chief Scientist Neuroscience and lead early exploratory projects and direct laboratory work in the Neuroscience drug discovery space principally based in Waltham and downtown Boston, MA, USA. You will contribute to the AstraZeneca Neuroscience portfolio by identification and validation of targets and potentially lead on-going projects Your day to day focus will be to work with our local AZ labs and collaborators in Boston to get experiments run and data sets analyzed and interpreted, you will also need to collaborate successfully and seemlessly across AZ sites in Cambridge, UK and Gothenberg, Sweden with colleagues in both the Neuroscience iMed and Discovery Science groups.  You’ll provide mentorship to 2-3 postdoctoral fellows.

Requirements

   Essential Requirements:  

 
       
  •      Advanced degree in life sciences, PhD and/or MD or equivalent    
  •    
  •      Significant scientific prowess and experience in a biological discipline as evidenced by strong scientific leadership skills and a track record of scientific excellence, publications and projects. Focus areas include cell biology including application of iPS/stem cells in drug discovery, application of cutting edge human genetics to drug discovery, in vitro/vivo electrophysiology and circuitry related to drug action, and biochemistry.
