GMD (Global Medicines Development) drives late-stage development of our innovative pipeline, transforming exciting science into valued new medicines and ensuring patients around the world can access them.

AstraZeneca’s vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas - breast, ovarian, lung and hematological cancers. As well as other tumor types, these are being targeted through four key platforms - immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalized healthcare and biomarker technologies.

The Associate Director of Global Medical Information (ADGMI) is accountable for the GMA Medical Content Plan and Medical Information deliverables to ensure timely access of approved medical materials. The ADGMI is accountable for development and maintenance of the TA/brand GMA Medical Content strategy, including optimizing resource efficiency, best practice sharing, planning, and alignment of priorities. This role is also accountable for the management of a team of Medical Information external resource partners (OSP/vendor) that cover both the development of content as well as customer engagement activities. The ADGMI will partner with the Global Medical Affairs Leaders (GMAL) and GMA TAVPs along with Global Medical Excellence Leaders and the local Medical Teams to identify content needs. This role is accountable for delivering approved global scientific content that are accessible to Regions/local MCs. The Associate Director of Global Medical Information will report to the Sr. Director of Global Medical Information.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead prioritization, planning and development of TA/brand GMA medical content per brand strategy/iMap (global foundational content) with local market consultation to ensure input and usability
  • Champion the standardization of GMA medical content to streamline creation, review and distribution while eliminating redundancies in resource utilization and number of deliverables.
  • Ensure visibility of global medical content plan to facilitate local MC input/awareness/leveraging of approved materials, reduce duplication of materials and ensure consistency
  • Drive collaboration and alignment with cross-functional stakeholders to identify pertinent data and solicit functional expertise when needed to ensure global content is developed with a high degree of medical integrity and clinical relevance.
  • Liaise with MCs, GMA, GPPS, and USMA/USMI in the development of medical content.
  • Solicit and understand MC level medical content needs and reflect it accordingly in global deliverables to ensure relevance and applicability to local market.
  • Manage external resources in the creation of medical content while ensuring alignment with global strategy and standards/templates
  • Provide MI expertise and leadership to address complex medical inquiries escalated to the GMI team from local markets. Monitor FAQs to determine need for development of global medical content.
  • Provide analysis of MI trends and application of feedback to content deliverables; assess available global medical content with what is anticipated and proactively provide medical information insights back to the organization
  • Ensure all global content is data validated and is supported by appropriate reputable references.
  • Contribute to the development of processes and capabilities for global medical content management that increase medical information consistency and leverage content creation and reuse at the MC/Region level; communicate and train local markets; contribute to local MI capability development
  • Contribute to the regional implementation of the global medical information platform (GMIP) for approved GMA content that is integrated/aligned with other AZ platforms

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic partner on the Global Medical Team to develop and implement the GMA Medical Content Plan
  • Provide leadership to the Global Medical Information TA team, including: prioritize and manage deliverables to ensure completion as per agreed upon timelines in content plan; fostering strong team performance
  • Lead the collaboration across the Medical Information TA/brand team to support the GMA Medical Content Plan
  • Ensure Medical Information alignment to TA/brand strategy
  • Coordinate GMI resources/plans for key international medical congresses
  • Lead and coordinate GMI activities for product acquisitions/divestures/alliances

Therapeutic Area/Brand Support

  • Participate as a strategic partner with the TA/brand team and GMA colleagues to ensure identification of opportunities and drive appropriate integration of GMI resources
  • Monitor the medical environment and apply scientific expertise, integrated with regulatory and compliance knowledge, to identify, analyse, and report Medical and Scientific Insight and trends to GMA that may impact medical strategy
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to identify innovative approaches for leveraging medical and scientific content to meet both business and customer needs.
  • Provide consult to the Global publications team on brand publications and gaps

GMA Medical Content

  • Lead the development, review and maintenance of GMA Medical content including standard responses, slide decks, training materials, FAQs and background documents
  • Incorporate customer insight and local MC feedback into global medical content and materials
  • Coordinate with GMA, local MCs/regions and external resources to develop global medical content
  • Proactively communicate with GMA and local MCs to ensure awareness of what global scientific content is currently available and what is anticipated based on the strategic plan (Global Medical Content plan)
  • Coordinate with GMA Leadership to develop, manage and maintain processes and technologies that maximize effective and efficient delivery of global medical content
  • Responsible for the development and review of global process, guidance, job aids, and related documents for Medical Information
  • Ensure compliance with global guidelines and policies, processes and procedures

Skills and Capabilities

  • Ability to think strategically and deliver long range medical content plans that are aligned with broader organizational goals

  • Scientific/Medical knowledge and technical skills in medical information provision

  • Highly developed literature search skills and experience in using literature searching tools

Essential Requirements

  • Advanced degree in scientific discipline or applicable health sciences field (e.g., PharmD, PhD, MD)
  • Significant pharmaceutical or related medical experience (> 5 years)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a team based organization (>5 years)
  • Medical Affairs experience is required; Global medical experience is preferred; Therapeutic Area experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in drug information and creating medical content
  • Proven ability to analyze and interpret clinical trial and published data.
  • Experience in medical writing and reviewing resources for medical accuracy and style.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing timelines.
  • Ability to partner and manage external resources to support execution of deliverables
  • Experience in strategic planning process; aattention to detail with excellent planning, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a complex, evolving, global environment; ability to work and build effective relationships across functions and geographies
