GMD (Global Medicines Development) drives late-stage development of our innovative pipeline, transforming exciting science into valued new medicines and ensuring patients around the world can access them.

AstraZeneca leverages strength and expertise in Immunology Science, where research efforts are focused on gaining a better understanding of the common biology and shared molecular pathways among inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, as well as the fundamental drivers and mechanisms of disease. This approach enables us to identify and select drug targets that have the potential to effectively treat not just one, but multiple inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As an Associate Director of Physicians you will provide technical leadership as either an expert lead for a number of processes or through leadership of a regional based group that ensures effective collaboration between physicians. You will develop and build, or act as a specialist expert, within a cross-functional multi-skilled team comprised of experts across multi-disciplinary project teams to design, execute, analyse and interpret clinical studies to validate novel therapeutic targets, develop novel biomarkers of pharmacological effects.

As a Director of Physicians you will be responsible for managing global or regional therapeutic or research projects or acting as an expert involved in the design, conduct, monitoring, data interpretation and reporting of individual clinical trials. You will ensures projects adhere to Good Clinical Practice and regulatory requirements and you will be responsible for overseeing development of the functional strategy or acting as a renowned expert in own field.

In this role you will design or manage the implementation of the Physicians strategy within Clinical Development both regionally and globally. You will use expertise and knowledge of global issues to develop strategic Physicians objectives for inclusion into AstraZeneca’s annual business objectives. You will define strategies or lead AstraZeneca’s response to complex technical issues for specific medical aspects in relation to current projects, new projects and various plans. You will provide expert advice in the area of specialism, influencing the development of statistics to the global business and Global Clinical Development. You will closely follow medical developments within assigned areas and disseminates new information within Clinical Development to transform trends and emerging data into new plans. You will liaise with the internal and external medical community to follow developments within areas of expertise. You will ensure an adequate number of qualified physicians is available for clinical testing to satisfy AstraZeneca’s objectives in the clinical testing area. You will maintain a high degree of understanding and awareness on new and emerging medical development. You will contribute to or manage the development of the senior management team in area of expertise. You will follow important developments and trends in scientific literature and develops contacts with opinion leaders. You will lead regulatory communication and preparation of higher level documents.


Essential Requirements

  • Degree in medicine and experience as a physician or academic
  • Experience in designing, monitoring and implementing clinical trials and interpreting trial results.
  • Phase III clinical trial
  • Significant experience in advanced research and development
  • Knowledge / expertise / experience with SLE.
  • Therapeutic area expertise and commercial understanding
  • Understanding of pharmaceutical safety, reporting and surveillance processes
  • Senior Physician Team and Development function
  • Development leaders
  • Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Development, Regulatory Department and Quality

  • Trained and Experienced Rheumatologist
  • Extensive general medical knowledge
  • External service providers and regulatory bodies
