About Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research

There is no greater privilege than to work towards bettering human health and no more exciting arena in which to do so than through discovery of new medicines.

-- Mark C. Fishman, President, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research

At Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), the global research organization of Novartis, we are committed to discovering innovative medicines to cure disease and improve human health. By hiring the best academic, biotech, and pharmaceutical trained scientists, we have fostered an atmosphere for drug discovery where innovation is rewarded. It is ultimately the talent of the individual that determines our success, while our state-of-the-art technologies and resources enable these ideas to be realized.

NIBR has major sites in Emeryville, California; Cambridge, Massachusetts; Basel, Switzerland; Horsham, UK; and Shanghai, China. Our Emeryville location focuses on early drug discovery efforts for the Oncology and Infectious Disease Areas and offers a variety of positions in Biology, Chemistry, and functions such as Technology, Patents, Research Sciences and other areas that support our scientific resources.

About the Infectious Diseases Area
The Infectious Diseases Area (IDA) seeks to discover and develop treatments to address unmet medical needs in the management and cure of bacterial and viral infections. The Virology group currently focuses on infections caused by hepatitis C virus, influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, human cytomegalovirus and other viruses of the immunocompromised host. The Antibacterials group investigates novel therapies for bacterial infections caused by difficult-to-treat Gram negative and Gram positive pathogens.

NIBR has just completed an expansion of our Infectious Diseases research in Emeryville, at the heart of Northern California's thriving biomedical community. Under the leadership of Don Ganem, M.D., one of the world's leading virologists, our new ID team focuses on identifying and exploiting novel molecular mechanisms for the interruption of pathogen replication and viability. In addition, we hope to break new ground in the search for novel viruses that might contribute to other human diseases, including tumors and autoimmune disorders. Our new ID headquarters in Emeryville will be fueled by a culture that combines the best of academia and biotech with the backing of a global organization - Novartis.
