Job Description

The Global Pharmaceutical R&D (GPRD) organization provides high quality goods and services at the lowest total acquisition cost through unified, global outsourcing strategies.  We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director, Clinical Outsourcing based in North Chicago, IL reporting to the Director, Clinical Outsourcing.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Economically and efficiently purchase services for GPRD Clinical Operations in compliance with Outsourcing and Purchasing policies, procedures, and objectives

  • Develop and manage a team of Project Managers and Contact Coordinators

  • Prioritize and assign contract workload for self and staff to meet project timelines

  • Assists with new hire recruitment

  • Mentor and assist in training staff in contract and budget development and administration

  • Works with Outsourcing management and other groups to identify areas of improvement and enhance the quality of contracts and the contracting process

  • Hold vendors accountable at the contract level to established performance metrics for outsourced activities.  Communicate ongoing issues to Supplier Manager

  • Expert in drafting, negotiating, and execution o all standard contract types: Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDA), meeting planning, termination letters, amendments, consulting agreements, clinical study agreements, service agreements, licenses, Phase I studies, Statement of Work (SOW), and Independent Practice Association (IPA), Site Management Organization (SMO), Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) and complex agreements:  Master Agreements, Start-up IPA's, and change orders

  • Drive submission of contract requests, competitive bidding process, bid defense meetings and vendor communication for the clinical teams

  • Prepare, negotiate, and implement agreements that maximize value and support GPRD activities on time and within budget and serve as a subject matter expert (SME)  for the most complex agreements

  • Identifies and resolves contract issues to ensure final contract is of the best value for quality, pricing, and service while contributing cost savings and other value added activity to support customer needs and expectations

  • Collaborates with clinical teams to develop and implement the therapeutic area outsourcing strategy and provides support for global contract management, including sourcing initiatives, affiliate and legal interface, and interpretation of guidance regarding contract content

  • Independently leads global strategic sourcing activities

  • Act as first line of contact for issue escalation related to contracts and budgets

  • Responsible for timely communication of contract issues to teams and Outsourcing management that could impact project timelines

  • Closely partner with therapeutic/functional areas, legal, office of ethics and compliance, and suppliers to resolve contract issues

  • Analyze financial information from supplier budgets to ensure pricing is consistent with services required

  • Perform budgetary reconciliation against service provider contracts

  • Utilize the GrantPlan clinical budgeting tool

  • Develop and maintain necessary contracting documentation according to departmental policies and procedures

  • Has signatory responsibility for agreements that < or = $750,000









  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Science, Business, or Finance

  • 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical industry with an emphasis on the business (contracting, outsourcing, finance) and technical (chemistry, biology, clinical) aspects

  • Demonstrated people management experience


  • Masters Degree or PhD in Engineering, Science, Business, or Finance
