There is a regular full-time Animal Program Associate Manager/Manager position available at The Jackson Laboratory, Sacramento. The Animal Program Assoc Mgr/ Manager role is responsible for ensuring the welfare, care and handling of animals at The Jackson Laboratory. These responsibilities include oversight of multiple mouse rooms and may include project management support or other operational support areas.
The incumbent is responsible for planning, training and development of staff, developing and initiating efficient processes and management of employee relations for the program. The Managers provide leadership, guidance and direction to their staff. Staff development includes recruitment, staff assignments, and mentorship of the team. The incumbent is responsible for day-to-day facility operations, staffing and safety in the assigned areas and for the execution of colony management plans in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, ACUC and AAALAC criteria, OSHA and specific demands for the proper care and management of each colony. Critical elements of successful performance include effective leadership, training and development of assigned staff, meeting project quality and quantity specifications and developing colony management and/or work flow strategies to maximize space and efficiency. The incumbent is well versed in genetics, performance management, project management, clean room operation and exceptional interpersonal skills.
The incumbent must have a comprehensive, in-depth understanding of mouse biology and genetics, colony management and animal husbandry, colony planning, molecular and biochemical testing methods and the use of assisted reproductive technologies. This knowledge can be obtained through a BS degree and four (4) years of experience or greater than eight (8) years successful professional experience in a related Animal Care field.
The incumbent must have experience in the operation and maintenance of barrier animal facilities, good laboratory practices, equipment logistics and workplace safety. The incumbent must have experience and proven success in staff management, mentoring, motivation and training, including the ability to delegate responsibilities and monitor activities of direct reports. The incumbent must have solid communication skills, including the ability to convey complex genetic, technical or conceptual ideas to technicians, customer facing roles and others.
