Job Description

Solazyme is seeking an experienced professional for the Analytical Development & Quality Lab Manager position. The position is located in South San Francisco, California and the  successful candidate will manage a broad range of chemical, biochemical and biological analysis for methods development and QC in support of projects and production needs. Solazyme’s advanced, proprietary technology uses algae to produce oils and biomaterials in standard fermentation facilities quickly, cleanly, cost effectively and at large scale.

Responsibilities:
-Manage and continue the development of in-house analytical methods
-Duties include managing and directing methods development, equipment selection, instrument calibrations, supply ordering, general lab upkeep and improvements.
-Provide staff development and training
-Leadership to Analytical Development and QC staff on methods, procedures and equipment
-Select, train and direct qualified professional personnel in the performance of all department functions, while evaluating their performance on an ongoing basis
-Develop timelines for projects and estimate the hours to complete them
-Write and/or review technical documentation, including SOPs, methods, protocols, internal reports and regulatory submissions Recommend cost-effective measures in managing the laboratory
-Assign analytical work, review lab results, manage data input and produce reports of findings as needed
-Interface with contract QC labs and evaluate prospective labs for specialized testing
-Establish and maintain product stability studies
-Ensure ongoing compliance with applicable lab practices and regulatory standards
-Keep current with technical developments in the industry and regulatory agency thinking
-Develop and maintain technical expertise through reading publications and web-based materials continuing professional education and training
-Assist Quality Director with special projects as required

Requirements

-MS or PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, or related field
-10+ years recent experience in analytical and/or bio-analytical laboratory management
-Demonstrated experience in analytical method development, laboratory set up, equipment and instrumentation selection and maintenance
-Sound analytical problem-solving and documentation skills
-Successful experience in transferring analytical methods to QC
-Oversee the transfer of validated test methods and troubleshoot problems related to execution of test methods to Quality Control
-Generate procedures for test methods, method validation protocols and reports
-Proficiency with HPLC, GC, ICP and spectroscopy techniques and equipment, including troubleshooting.
-Proficiency with basic wet chemistry and organoleptic techniques.
-Familiarity with the chemistry/science of microalgae and oils is highly desired.
-Excellent problem solving and communication skills required.
-Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary settings is essential.
-Ability to think creatively and integrate information from various disciplines when solving problems
-Ability to find ways to increase department efficiency
-Ability to execute assigned tasks with other departments
-Ability to write and speak clearly and concisely
-Ability to develop and maintain expertise through continuing professional education and training
-Familiarity with LIMS systems highly desired.
