The Company:
AVI BioPharma is a company focused on drug development and commercialization with clinical programs in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a range of viral diseases including Ebola, Marburg, Junin and Dengue viruses and, through a partnership with Cook Medical, in the prevention of restenosis in patients receiving a drug-eluting arterial stent after angioplasty for arterial occlusion. Most recently, we were awarded a contract by the Department of Defense to develop anti-viral therapeutics against H1N1 or “swine flu.”
The Position:
AVI is currently seeking an experienced individual as Director, Virology/Immunology Research. This position will report to the Senior Vice-President, Discovery Research. In this position you will provide leadership, management and supervision of research directed towards development of drugs from proof of concept to preclinical pharmacology programs. You will oversee study design, implementation, thorough analysis of the results and, as part of a team; you will participate in selection of drug candidates. You will participate in preparation of briefing documents and reports for regulatory and funding agencies. The main focus of this area of research is identification and development of novel anti-infective, mostly antiviral, drugs and targets for indications with unmet medical needs. The candidate will interact closely with the antiviral group supported by funding from Department of Defense. REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Virology, Immunology or other relevant graduate education, plus at least 5 years experience in pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.
• Knowledge of RNA targeted therapeutics, including oligonucleotides, siRNA as well as small molecules a plus.
• Knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Familiarity with drug formulations a plus.
• Proven track record in pharmaceutical or anti-viral research essential.
• Understanding of molecular, cellular, and physiologic mechanisms of drug action in infectious disease is essential.
• Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated computer skills (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Vector NTI or equivalent).
• Applicant must have current legal work authorization to work for any company in the United States.
