DESCRIPTION
OBJECTIVES: Serve as DMPK and PK/PD expert to discovery project teams, provide input into research strategies and be involved in collaboration with other Takeda sites in advancing compounds to IND. Provide expertise in area of PK/PD data analysis, interpretation and study design, and to participate in core-level decision-making. This individual will be expected to present, promote and defend their ideas in cross-functional team settings, and influence critical strategic decisions in multiple therapeutic areas
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
* Conducts PK and PK/PD analysis during late stage lead optimization through early pre-clinical development, and collaborates in PK/PD and efficacy study design
* Develops robust PK/PD models to illustrate the relationship between PK, PD, and efficacy in animal efficacy models
* Predicts PK, efficacious dose, and optimal dosing schedule in humans
* Designs, executes, and reports key PK studies to support compound progression from lead optimization to clinical candidate selection
* Collaborates with chemists to address structure-DMPK relationship and improves DMPK properties during lead optimization
* Collaborates with safety assessment group on study design and provides toxicokinetic data analysis and interpretation
* Provides on-going PK/PD training and mentoring to TSD PK scientists and helps apply such knowledge to their respective discovery projects
* Effectively communicates results within and outside the organization in various ways such as presentations and publications
* Influences the course of projects, scientific methods and/or technical company direction; develops and executes innovative methodologies to influence research approaches and efforts; devises complex approaches to apply scientific knowledge to solve problems
* Independently designs complex experimental strategies to discover probable drug targets or candidates that address project goals; acts as a technical and management advisor to others; operates with substantial latitude for action or decision
* Identifies, proposes and develops new solutions to the discovery strategy; contributes to development of company's concepts and principles and achieves objectives in creative and effective ways; develops unique solutions to complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors
* Manages other PhD's and/or Research Associates; typically a combination of direct and indirect reports; provides mentoring to all scientific staff
* Manages more than one project of broad scope and high degree of complexity
* Represents own research and may represent company research to senior leadership or for scientific collaborations or at an international scientific conference recognized in the therapeutic discipline
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
* Ph.D. or Pharm. D. with emphasis in pharmacokinetics and PK/PD and minimum 8 years of relevant experience, OR
* MS in life science and minimum 14 years of relevant experience, OR
* BS in life science and minimum 17 years of relevant experience
* DMPK Leadership in advancing compounds through discovery into IND-enabling stage
* Proficiency in PK, PK/PD, PK/efficacy modeling using various software such as WinNonlin and NONMEM
* Thorough understanding of the commonly used approaches for human PK prediction, and hands-on experience in application to multiple discovery programs
* Successful experience in predicting human efficacious dose and assisting clinical dosing schedule optimization
* Experience in the therapeutic areas of Oncology, Inflammation or Metabolic Disease
* Demonstrated independent thought/creativity in science and success in coordinating and executing research to further corporate goals
* Demonstrated inter-disciplinary knowledge of drug discovery and ability to use this knowledge to influence project strategy
* Demonstrated ability to successfully direct multiple scientific endeavors simultaneously
* High-level technical skills, with demonstrated application and creativity
* Excellent communication, collaboration and multitasking skills and ability to work in a team setting
* High degree of scientific discretion/intuition
* Conveys ideas in an experimentally detailed yet scientifically concise manner
* Demonstrated proficiency at presentation of original work at conferences
* Competent in authorship of peer-reviewed scientific papers
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
* Exposure to hazardous/toxic/dangerous chemicals
* Prolonged standing and/or sitting.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
* May travel to various domestic conferences or client sites, including overnight trips
* Some international travel may be required
* Requires a minimum of 2% travel
