DESCRIPTION
OBJECTIVES:
Plays a leading and integration role in the protein purification team. Responsibilities encompass purification and characterization of recombinant proteins for X-ray crystallization or for screening assays in drug discovery programs as well as involvement in advancing the technical and scientific expertise of Structural Biology.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

* Responsible for purification and characterization of challenging proteins and to transfer processes to junior protein chemists

* Provides technical support as it relates to protein recovery and purification to increase productivity for the department

* Identifies and experimentally customizes properties of purified recombinant proteins when necessary

* Provides interactive leadership for other protein chemists to significantly contribute to the success of departmental and company goals

* Provides motivation/inspiration to colleagues and consistently communicates with molecular biologists, protein chemists and crystallographers to optimize work flow

* Evaluates and reviews data, determines problem solutions, project priorities and future experiments in multidisciplinary setting

* Has broad responsibility for protein deliveries and crystallization and for how the research within structural biology integrates with wider range corporate goals

* Develops and contributes to company's intellectual property domain by way of patents and/or publications, often as principal author

* Has significant cross-functional depth and interacts with scientists across multiple TSD departments and other Takeda sites to advance research program needs

* Influences the course of projects, scientific methods and/or technical company direction; develops and executes innovative methodologies to influence research approaches and efforts; devises complex approaches to apply scientific knowledge to solve problems

* Identifies, proposes and develops new solutions to the discovery strategy; contributes to development of company's concepts and principles and achieves objectives in creative and effective ways; develops unique solutions to complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors

* Manages more than one project of broad scope and high degree of complexity

* Represents own research and may represent company research to senior leadership or for scientific collaborations or at an international scientific conference recognized in the therapeutic discipline

REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

* Ph.D. in life science with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or

* M.S. in life science with a minimum of 14 years of relevant experience, or

* B.S. in life science with a minimum of 17 years of relevant experience

* Must have strong protein purification and analytical skills, and a thorough understanding of protein expression and purification method development

* Good verbal and written communication skills are essential

* Exhibits good leadership skills in driving scientific and strategic direction

* Demonstrated scientific creativity, initiative, independent thought, problem-solving capability, and a track record of productivity

* Research experience with multiple classes of therapeutic proteins is desirable

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

* Exposure to hazardous/toxic/dangerous chemicals

* Working in cold room (4oC)

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

* Ability to drive to or fly to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. Some international travel may be required.

* Requires approximately 1-5 % travel.
