The City of Livonia is located in southeastern Michigan (JOBS) just 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of downtown Detroit. It is part of Wayne County, and home to 100,545 people.
The community was settled by pioneers from New England and New York, and named after Livonia, New York. Livonia was established as a township in 1835, and incorporated as a city in 1950. Greenmead Historical Village is Livonia's top heritage attractions, and features a number of buildings from the 1800s. Highlights include the Hill House Museum, a farm complex and gardens, two schoolhouses, and much more. Greenmead is also the site of many special events, such as the annual Arts and Crafts Festival, garden walks, tea parties, and Music Under the Stars. History buffs should also make time to visit Wilson Barn, a 1919 building that illustrates the city's agricultural roots. Here you'll also find a farmers' market, an antique car show, and special events during the holiday season. Other annual events include Highland Games and SPREE, a week-long celebration in honor of the city's founding. For great music, check out the latest performance by the Livonia Symphony Orchestra or the Livonia Civic Chorus.
Livonia also has the distinction of being a very kid-friendly city. Both census results and magazine rankings have shown that Livonia is an ideal place for raising a family, thanks to its great schools, safe community, and numerous family-oriented recreational programs.
Looking for some outdoor fun? Livonia offers three 18-hole golf courses and 1,342 acres (543 hectares) of parklands. An especially popular destination is Newburgh Lake, where you can boat or fish during the summer, and enjoy skating and ice fishing in the winter. Livonia residents also have easy access to the many attractions of Detroit, Lake Erie, and Michigan's miles of sandy beaches.
Michigan’s vast life-science industry also makes Livonia a place to settle. Michigan is home to a wide variety of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, some of which include, i3, Pfizer, Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., Asterand, Inc., QuatRx Pharmaceuticals, Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Ltd., Cerenis Therapeutics, Inc., and Compendia Bioscience.
