Portland, Oregon (JOBS) is my kind of town. You're never more than minutes from a spectacular coffee shop or a pub. It's a city of cafés and markets, of art galleries and museums (large or small), and of parks, parks, and more parks. It's easy to get around to all these places, too, whether you travel by the efficient transit service, walk, or bike (Portland has been rated the #1 biking city in the US more than once). It's got all this and less rain per year than places like Houston or Atlanta (which is not what you'd expect from the Pacific Northwest).
If you love to shop, Portland is a great place for you. Besides the fact that you have a choice between quaint shops and large shopping malls, you also have no sales tax. It's always nice to see the ticket price and know exactly what you're paying! There's even a Saks Fifth Avenue, actually on Fifth Ave.
For you outdoorsy types, you'll experience several different levels of bliss. The city lies on the south bank of the Columbia River (Vancouver, Washington is on the north bank), and the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is about 67 miles (108 kilometers) east. For the skiers and snowboarders among you, nearby Mount Hood (which is less than an hour's drive) has four resorts and North America's longest ski season. The hiking is awe-inspiring and the fishing is legendary.
Epicureans are in for a treat. Lately, Portland has become a breeding ground and destination for some world-class chefs. This is probably due to all the great farms, and orchards within a 60-mile (96-kilometer) radius, not to mention its proximity to the Pacific and, therefore, seafood. While you're at it, why don't you compliment your wonderful dinner with an equally wonderful wine? Portland is rapidly becoming known as a wine destination.
