Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (JOBS) has come a long way since the steel factories closed – today's revitalized
Pittsburgh is a trendy urban playground.
With 29 colleges and universities, including the famous University
of Pittsburgh and the elite Carnegie Mellon
University, Pittsburgh has the dynamism and vitality that young intellectuals bring. You'll find a lively arts
scene led by three major theaters, the Benedum Center, Heinz Hall, and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Of course, the most interesting art can usually be found in the
independent venues and galleries outside of the mainstream entertainment districts. In Pittsburgh, East Carson
Street in the city's South Side is the place to find local galleries and up-and-coming musicians in the hot
bar-and-club scene.
South Side is definitely one of the more interesting neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. As the city's former industrial
heart, the area is rich in history. You'll find beautifully restored Victorian homes, a vibrant commercial
district, and the two remaining inclines (or funiculars) in the city. Pittsburgh is a city of hills, and it
traditionally depended on a network of these inclines to take people up and down. Riding these cars offers a
wonderful panoramic view of the city. South Side is also home to Station Square, a hip shopping and entertainment complex located in a stunning historic
building.
Other areas of Pittsburgh also have distinct charms. Eastern Pittsburgh is the city's multicultural center, where
you'll find cafés, shops, and restaurants that cater to almost every ethnic taste. The area is also home to
Pittsburgh's hospital alley. For upscale living, check out northern Pittsburgh. With a large historic district,
you'll find quiet tree-lined streets, grand mansions dating back to the 19th century, and inviting public spaces
such as Riverview Park. The north end is also about arts: it features a unique art gallery, the Mattress Factory, which showcases works by artists in
residence.
Besides trendy urban living, Pittsburgh is a classic sports town. With the NFL's Steelers, the NHL's Penguins, and MLB's
Pirates, you'll find plenty to
get you into the spirit of this lively city.
