Denver, Colorado (JOBS) the Mile High City (really – it's exactly 5,280 feet/1,609 meters above sea level) is nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and is one of America's fastest growing cities. It is known as a clean and green city with more than 200 parks and dozens of tree-lined boulevards. As it contains the country's highest percentage of high school and college graduates, it is also the most educated city in the US.
Rejoice, fitness fans! It is also the "thinnest" city in the US, according to a federal study. With the weather (more later) and abundance of recreational opportunities in Denver and environs, this is not surprising. Denver has the largest city park system in the US, including 205 parks in the city limits and 20,000 acres (8,094 hectares) of parks in the nearby mountains. You can hike, blade, jog, ski, camp, climb, boat …. And then there are all the golf courses.
Have kids to entertain? Check out the Elitch Gardens Theme Park, the Denver Zoo, or the Children's Museum of Denver. And what kid wouldn't love Dinosaur Ridge?
Want to relax and let someone else play for you? Watch a Broncos, Avalanche, Rockies, or Nuggets game!
Not sporty? Denver has the second largest performing arts center in the US – the Denver Performing Arts Complex, which has eight theatres and more than 10,000 seats. Or head out to one of the local museums, such as the Denver Art Museum, the Black American West Museum & Heritage Center, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, or the Colorado History Museum.
Unlike some Western cities, Denver has a central downtown area, and it includes hotels (with some 5,300 rooms), the convention center, a performing arts complex, restaurants, night spots, and, yes, shopping! A mile-long pedestrian mall cuts through the heart of downtown Denver.
Now for the weather! Nothing about Denver is more misunderstood than the city's climate. Located just east of a high mountain barrier and a long distance from any moisture source, Denver has a mild, dry, and arid climate. Denver can get the occasional storm, but, overall, it receives only eight to 15 inches (20 to 38 cm) of precipitation a year (which is about the same as Los Angeles). But what most people don't know, is that it gets 300 days of sun each year, which is more sunny days than either San Diego or Miami Beach. The average winter temperature is 45F (7C), and the average summer temperature is around 73F (22C). The golfer will be happy to know that golf courses remain open all year!
