The minute you arrive in Tacoma, Washington's (JOBS) third-largest city, pause and take in the beauty of the city and its surroundings.
The first thing you'll notice is massive Mount Rainier, a snow-capped, active volcano located only 22 miles (35 kilometers) southeast of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. At a towering 14,410 feet (4,392 meters), it is the highest peak in the state. And its setting, within its namesake Mount Rainier National Park, puts it in the midst of a perfect place to get active or to relax. (Bird watchers, keep an eye out for the bald eagles soaring high overhead.)
Let's move from the highest peak to the busy port, located on the cool waters of Puget Sound. Tacoma is the sixth-largest container port in the world, and its waterfront has recently been transformed into a spectacle of modern art and civil architecture. The Thea Foss Waterway is nothing short of magnificent. Sit on the esplanade and watch the sailboats travel in and out of dock, or take a jog along the beautifully redesigned trails. The nearby Museum of Glass is a sight to behold. Inspired by, and the home of, the works of internationally known artist and local celebrity Dale Chihuly, this unique museum is connected to Pacific Avenue, and the university campus by the Bridge of Glass.
Despite a vibrant nightlife, energetic arts scene (e.g., the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts), and fantastic shopping, Tacoma retains its comfortable, homey feel. A pioneer in neighborhood protection, Tacoma is as safe as it is beautiful, making it easier to enjoy and a great spot to raise a family.
And it's convenient – if you want additional variety, head to the north end of the "Sea-Tac" metro area, and visit Seattle, just over 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.
Come see this jewel in the Pacific Northwest, respected as both a major trade center and a cultural hotspot. Tacoma, long ago dubbed the City of Destiny, will show you how the name rings true in a city that is both as delicate as glass and as rugged and exciting as the extreme landscapes that surrounds it.
