You want it all: mountains and palm trees, city convenience and natural surroundings, great weather and inexpensive golfing. Where do you go? San Bernardino, of course!
This city of more than 185,000 is set in San Bernardino County, just 59 miles (94 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, (JOBS) yet it is still close to nature, with the San Bernardino National Forest within close range. And speaking of ranges, there are mountains here – go to the top for winter skiing or stay at the bottom for camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, cycling, and golfing. Or go up, up in the air for paragliding – for a view like no other. But if you're tired of these wonderful activities, there is also the Mojave Desert nearby or acres of cherry and apple orchards to wander through. And for a quick getaway, you are near the Ontario International Airport.
In downtown San Bernardino, Main Street's Court Street Square is a great place to bring a picnic lunch or to participate in a variety of events, including the Route 66 Rendezvous, an annual event that attracts 500,000 antique car enthusiasts from all over the world. Of course, malls abound, and, if you are in the market for antiques, you will find all kinds of different original shops throughout the city. And being in such proximity to the Mexican border, you can be assured of getting some great authentic Mexican food in the local restaurants.
There are plenty of restaurants and bars to fill your nightlife with excitement, not to mention the San Bernardino Symphony, the California Theater of Performing Arts, or the Sturges Theater for evening performances. Then there is the Redlands Symphony, the Light Opera Association, the Community Concert Association, and the Sinfonia Mexicana.
