The city of San Mateo, California (JOBS) lies on San Francisco Bay in the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area.
The area was explored by the Spanish in the 1770s, and the community was originally named San Mateo Creek by the Spanish clergyman, Padre Pedro Font. Following the establishment of a railway link to nearby San Francisco, San Mateo became a popular summer and weekend retreat for the larger city's wealthy citizens. San Mateo was eventually incorporated in 1894.
San Mateo lies at the crossroads of three major freeways that lead to San Francisco in the north, San Jose to the south, and the East Bay area to the east and, as a result, is one of California's largest suburbs.
Downtown San Mateo is a pedestrian-friendly mixture of historical buildings, retail shops, and first-rate restaurants. The city is home to the Coyote Point Museum, a learning center with wildlife and gardens, and exhibitions and programs related to the global environment.
San Mateo's 18-hole Poplar Creek Golf Course is one of the most popular in northern California. Its fairways run through forests and pass by rock-edged lakes, a waterfall, and streams. Fun of a "cooler" kind can be found at San Mateo's Ice Center, a public ice skating rink located in the San Mateo Bridgepointe Shopping Center.
And of course, with the Bay Area surrounding San Mateo, everything – from the Pacific coast to the wineries, to the bustling metropolis of San Francisco, and all it has to offer – is only a short drive away.
