Troy is located in Michigan's (JOBS) Oakland County, 23 miles (37 kilometers) north of downtown Detroit. With a population of more than 81,000, Troy is the 13th largest city in Michigan.
In 2008, Troy was ranked 22nd on a list of "Best Places to Live" in the United States, by Money magazine. Some of its features, as reported by Money, are, "… some of the highest-ranked schools in Michigan, moderately priced homes, safe streets and low property taxes, Troy is a great place for families. It offers events for all ages – including free summer jazz concerts, family festivals, and camps for kids. Its annual Troy Daze Festival attracts 100,000 annually, featuring a Miss Troy pageant, rides, games and food. Though the city lacks a significant downtown, it thrives around its green space, featuring 900 acres of parkland, as well as many museums, theatres, and parks."
Oakland County also provides great opportunities for outdoor activities, with 13 county parks, nearly 60 miles (97 kilometers) of trails and natural landscapes, including five golf courses, two waterparks, and nature centers. When winter comes, the Fridge Toboggan Run, with a 55-foot (17-meter) drop and speeds up to 30 miles per hour (48 kph), is fun for families.
Michigan’s vast life-science industry is another reason to settle in Troy. Michigan is home to a wide variety of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, some of which include, i3, Pfizer, Aastrom Biosciences, Inc., Asterand, Inc., QuatRx Pharmaceuticals, Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories, Ltd., Cerenis Therapeutics, Inc., and Compendia Bioscience.
