Newton, Massachusetts (JOBS) is a suburban community encompassing 13 villages. It is located on the south bank of the Charles River, nine miles (14 kilometers) west of Boston. Newton has a population of 83,829, and is part of Middlesex County.
Newton was named because it became a "new town" when it separated from Cambridge in 1691. In 1891, Fig Newton cookies were named after the city. One hundred years later, the city of Newton and Nabisco held a joint celebration that included performances by Juice Newton and a giant Fig Newton that was served to participants. For more information about the past, visit the Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead. This 1809 house once served as a station along the Underground Railroad, and now houses historic artifacts, photos, manuscripts, costumes, and decorative arts.
Fans of classical music are in for a real treat, since the city is home to both the Newton Symphony Orchestra and the New Philharmonia Orchestra. Golf enthusiasts can apply for membership at some prestigious courses, including the Woodland Golf Club, Charles River Country Club, and the Brae Burn Country Club. If you're heading out for a stroll, take in the view from the beautiful 19th century Echo Bridge, or enjoy the meadow and woodland trails of Norumbega Park.
