Arlington is an urban county of 189,453 located just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. Until 1847 when it was ceded to (JOBS), Arlington was part of the District of Columbia. Arlington is the site of the capital area's busy Reagan National Airport.
To most non-residents, the city is best known for being home to the Pentagon and to Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to visiting these famous sites, you can learn about area history by visiting locations such as Arlington House and the Arlington Historical Museum.
But Arlington is more than just monuments and memorials – it's home to a variety of neighborhoods, which often sound to visitors like individual towns, such as Crystal City and Pentagon City (which happen to be two great places for shoppers to take up residence). And you can also get outdoors: Arlington has nearly 200 public parks and playgrounds and 86 miles (138 kilometers) of biking and jogging trails. Another fine place to take in a bit of nature is at Theodore Roosevelt Island, a 91-acre (37-hectare) wooded island in the Potomac. In Arlington, you're also steps from the Washington & Old Dominion Trail, reputedly one of the skinniest and longest (45 miles, or 72 kilometers) trails in Virginia!
